Keep getting caught up in the fine details of your paintings? You might need a bigger brush!🖌️

Jon Doran recently shared some superb advice for our students: Use a brush that feels slightly too big for the job. This forces you to paint with shapes rather than falling into "drawing" with paint. This little trick will help keep your landscapes vibrant and painterly.

Once our underpainting suggests the general atmosphere of the landscape, we can begin making decisions about which areas need stronger contrasts, and which colours need to be muted or strengthened.

We can be bolder with the paint, using confident brushstrokes to push areas back and really firm up the shapes in the landscape.

In this short clip, artist Jon Doran demonstrates how he uses thinner and incredibly light brushstrokes to block in translucent layers of oil paint. Barely tickling the board with the brush, he establishes the composition, palette and tonal structure of the landscape in a matter of minutes.

After reestablishing the shapes in the landscape with a fine brush, we'll see Jon develop this painting by pushing things back and building up thin layers. Follow us for part 2 ♥️
