A lot of my piano music starts with something I’ve noticed in the natural world - a particular landscape, the changing light, the sound of water, or simply the feeling of being somewhere quiet.

Nature often gives me the starting point for a piece, even if the finished music doesn’t try to describe it literally.

That feels like a nice connection to my upcoming concert with Simeon Walker on Sunday 4th October. Simeon’s music also has a strong sense of space, atmosphere and landscape, so I’m really looking forward to putting our two musical worlds together for an intimate evening at the studio.

What does a piano sound like in almost complete darkness?

On Friday 16 October, I’ll be heading underground into Newcastle’s Victoria Tunnel for another Atmospherica solo piano concert.

There’s no stage lighting, no bright concert hall, no distractions. Just the piano, the sound of the tunnel, and a small audience sitting quietly beneath the streets of Newcastle.

The music is gentle, spacious and unhurried — and in the darkness, you hear it differently.

Notes seem to hang in the air. Silence becomes part of the music. And for an hour, the outside world feels very far away.

The brilliant .ouseburn recorded the ouseburn for 13 hours overnight last night from our studios - hosted the mic! Hear the grey wagtails that nest every year and who knows what other sounds occurring overnight!

Studio holder Steve Luck is performing tomorrow evening (Friday 15th May 2026 at 7.30pm) in one of Newcastle’s most unusual venues - underground in the amazing Victoria Tunnel.

A solo piano concert in near darkness, with just a small light on the piano keys and music resonating through the tunnel’s historic brickwork. It’s an immersive, atmospheric experience that feels a world away from the surface above.

There are still a few tickets left if anyone would like to go along.

I’m off for a nosey round Ouseburn Open Studios tomorrow; one of my fave ways to spend a Sunday.

This is an opportunity to:

👀 See the messy, brilliant, behind-the-scenes magic
🥰 Buy stuff directly from artists and makers whilst supporting the local creative economy

We've got: 36 Lime Street, The Biscuit Factory & their studios, Biscuit Tin Studios and B.Box Studios artists all taking part!

It’s also the perfect excuse to make a full day of it in Ouseburn; unreal brunch spots, lovely lush lunch options and a few cheeky drinks if you fancy it! And don't forget to swing by indie places like The Find and Flea Circus to do some homeware shopping/treasure hunting!

So if you’re about tomorrow…Get yourself down!
