13 June – 25 July 2026 (private view Friday 12th June 6-8pm)
Abject Gallery & The Moving Gallery, Sunderland
This summer, Assembly brings an ambitious international gathering of contemporary sculptural practice to Sunderland, presenting work by thirty-five distinguished members and fellows of the Royal Society of Sculptors (RSS) at Abject Gallery and Moving Gallery. Founded more than a century ago, the Royal Society of Sculptors is one of the UK’s leading artist-led organisations dedicated to supporting artists and championing contemporary sculpture.
Curated by Alexandra Carr MRSS and Alex Breeze of Breeze Creatives, Assembly celebrates Sunderland as a site for international artistic exchange and contemporary cultural dialogue. Breeze Creatives operate several artistic and cultural initiatives in the region with a mission to foster emerging and established talent. The exhibition positions the city within a wider international conversation around contemporary sculpture and artistic practice.
The distinctive atmosphere and layered history of the Athenaeum building provide a compelling setting for new, current and site-responsive works from across the UK, Europe, Mexico and the United States. The exhibition includes artists whose practices span installation, land art, performance, object-making, architectural intervention, film and expanded material experimentation.
Assembly reflects the breadth, ambition and critical relevance of sculptural practice today, bringing together artists working across generations, disciplines and geographies. The exhibition explores how sculpture can hold memory, transform space and shape human encounter. Across the galleries, visitors will encounter works that move between the intimate and monumental, the poetic and political, the humorous and profound. The exhibition examines themes of ecology, migration, identity, labour, landscape and the human experience. Assembly foregrounds sculpture as one of the most dynamic and expansive forms in contemporary art today.
Co-curator Alexandra Carr MRSS says:
“Assembly brings together an exceptional group of internationally recognised artists in a spirit of collaboration and cultural exchange. At a moment of transformation in Sunderland, it feels particularly important to present ambitious, contemporary sculpture within a city whose architectural character, industrial history and cultural identity offers such a compelling context for new work.”
Alex Breeze of Breeze Creatives adds:
“It’s exciting to welcome such a diverse range of artists from across the globe to Sunderland. It’s an honour to host such a broad cross section of contemporary sculptural practice within the city.”
