We were finally allowed back into The Room yesterday. There had been a lot more work to do than expected. More materials removed due to asbestos contamination which delayed the handover.
Thankfully yesterday and today I’ve managed to get all the insulation reinstated, the fabric rehung (accompanied with lots of swearing!) and the fire escape door reinstalled.
The power was supposed to be reconnected today but the sparky couldn’t get there so has promised tomorrow. Back to normal from the weekend.🤞

The Current State Of The Main Room. The other side of our walls have had the asbestos sheets removed, our room is sealed off from the works. We are just awaiting the dismantling of the tents and we can get back in and reinstate the insulation and fabrics.

We’re having some work carried out over the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately we’ve had to remove the acoustic treatment on one wall but it’s interesting to see the original wall again after 12 years.

Progress on the final undecorated corner at the room. Glossed the woodwork, overboarded the ceiling, insulated the bare walls, put new fabric on the insulation, fixed properly. I even sewed the fabric around the light switches. New carpet, which is cleaner than the existing and messing with my OCD 😬 Just need to fabric the ceiling, sand the filler and emulsion columns and its done.

I can’t believe it’s been just over 10 years since I took over this space (11/4/2011). An awful lot of changes have taken place in The Rooms over that time. Slowly but surely getting better with every alteration and modification.
It’s nearly there, the place I envisioned when I visited it for the second or third time. I had seen it before when it was occupied by a few of my ex students. It was incredibly run down, verging on derelict with water pouring in on the flat roofs.
Thankfully all resolved now. There’s very little to do now, a little more re-glossing of woodwork and tidying one corner out.
I’ve got to say it’s been a lifeline during lockdown having projects to do and a change of scenery.
It’s a beautiful space with a very comfortable and peaceful feeling when you’re in there by yourself and very conducive to creativity when it’s full of performing musicians.
Pictures are of the day I met Peter the landlord there to view it and the up to date versions of exactly the same views. Starting in ‘Large Organ Corner’ going clockwise back to the corner, 6 shots of Then and Now followed by composites of the same images.

With the doors glossed, I think that draws a close to the renovation of this side of the live room, Phew!
