A sonic boom isn’t an explosion; it’s the sound we hear when an aircraft travels at or faster than the speed of sound.

• Below the speed of sound (subsonic):
Pressure waves move ahead of the aircraft, spreading out smoothly in all directions.

• Approaching the speed of sound (Mach 1):
The aircraft begins to catch up with its own pressure waves, causing them to compress and pile up.

• Above the speed of sound (supersonic):
The aircraft outruns these disturbances, forming a Mach cone of shock waves trailing behind it.

The aircraft isn’t making one loud noise at a single moment; it’s continuously generating shock waves along its entire length, and the boom is heard wherever those waves pass.
