Newcastle Noir International Crime Writing Festival Announces 'Time Out' for 2026, with Return Planned for May 2027

Newcastle Noir International Crime Writing Festival, one of the North East’s longest-running crime fiction events, has announced it will take a “year out” in 2026, with plans to return in 2027.

Festival organisers have confirmed that this pause will allow time to develop a renewed future vision, while maintaining the continued appeal of the festival.

Established in 2014 by academic and crime fiction aficionado Dr Jacky Collins (aka Dr Noir), Newcastle Noir has grown over the past 12 years into a belovèd fixture in the UK’s crime fiction calendar, held at Newcastle's Central Library.

Dr Jacky Collins (aka Dr Noir), festival founder and director, said:

"We are committed to building on Newcastle Noir's special roots and ensuring it thrives in 2027 and beyond. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our wonderful volunteers, partners and loyal supporters who have helped make the festival what it is today.”

“The decision to take a year out is an important step as we shape the next chapter of the festival. We are committed to building on its reputation for creativity and community, and to returning in 2027.

Since its launch, Newcastle Noir has brought together writers, readers, publishers and volunteers for a vibrant programme celebrating all things crime fiction. Over the years we have hosted CWA winners and nominees alongside emerging and local voices, offering audiences access to world-class talent while nurturing new writing through workshops and development opportunities.

Authors who had agreed to appear at NN2026 will be given first refusal for NN2027.

Further details about plans for the festival’s return in 2027 will be announced soon.

If you read and loved Shuggie Bain or Young Mungo, you’ll not want to miss our event with Booker-prize winning author Douglas Stuart on Thursday 28 May at Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema.

Douglas Stuart will be chatting about his highly anticipated new novel, John of John – a tender and unflinching exploration of masculinity, sexuality and the silent struggle of unspoken desires in a controlling Presbyterian community on the Isle of Harris.

And the Glasgow-born writer will be in conversation with none other than bestselling Scottish crime author Val McDermid – we can’t wait for this pairing!

There will be book sales from Forum Books at the event, including the chance to grab a copy of John of John and meet Douglas to get your books signed.

Book your tickets now: https://newwritingnorth.com/event/douglas-stuart-john-of-john/

This event is part of our Right to Read programme, bringing world-class authors right here to Newcastle to celebrate the National Year of Reading.
