Good news!

We are very excited and proud that ‘Ye Olde Wishing Well’ film made by one of our steering group members EJ Raymond will be at the Northern Pride!! Do come along and see it at the fabulous Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle on Saturday 19th July at 5.30pm!

🎬 Ye Olde Wishing Well Screening 🎬

Ye Olde Wishing Well is a visually-driven short film written and directed by a profoundly Deaf, non-binary filmmaker, EJ Raymond, who uses British Sign Language (BSL) as their primary language. Originally written over 20 years ago, the film was finally brought to life in 2024 through a successful crowdfunding campaign and the support of co-producer Paul Kerr, a fellow advocate for Deaf creatives.

Filmed on location in and around Newcastle upon Tyne, Ye Olde Wishing Well weaves themes of hope, memory, and resilience through a uniquely Deaf lens. The film reflects the creator’s lived experience navigating the intersection of Deafness and non-binary identity, exploring the challenges of marginalisation within both the Deaf and LGBTQ+ communities.

Screened under the theme Unapologetically Visible at Northern Pride 2025, this work not only highlights ongoing barriers to access and representation in the arts but also honours the filmmaker’s late mentor, Viv Adam, whose encouragement helped shape this long-awaited project.

📅 Saturday 19th July

The Wey Aye! Deaf Festival team had a great day at the Gateshead Bridgebuilders Community Event at the Baltic Art Centre!! We gave talks on how they helped us with the Wey Aye Deaf Festival, raising awareness about Deaf Art, bringing the communities together, breaking down barriers and how we helped the younger Deaf members of the steering team to gain confidence, giving them roles and jobs. It’s been really rewarding to see them going from strength to strength. What a talented bunch they are!
