Gianna Williams and Cristina Rovaldi at The Bridge Folk Club, 13 April 2026

Villanella Che All’acqua Vai (Giovanni Leonardo Mollica, c1565)

Giovanni Leonardo Mollica (1525 – 1602) was a harpist who sang and played for the aristocracy of Naples and Rome during the Renaissance period. We felt like aristocracy at The Bridge when Cristina and Gianna visited us from Italy and brought us this lovely song. Everyone at The Bridge is fluent in Renaissance Italian, obviously, but Gianna did explain the lyrics before Cristina sang:
Villanella is a peasant girl who is going to the well, carrying a large jug on her head. The man who is in love with her thinks she looks like she looks like a queen when she passes him, and she is wearing a crown instead of a jug. He says ‘Alas, I am dying for you’

Nicole Lewinsky at The Bridge Folk Club, 13 April 2026

French dance set (All trad)

Nicole is playing three French bransles; two Bransles de Bourgogne by Jacques Moderne (died c1561), and Bransle de Champaigne by Claude Gervaise, c1550

A branle is a type of French dance popular from the early 1500s century up to the present day. The term also refers to the music of the dance

The word bransle is pronounced ‘brawl’ in English and it can also be spelled branle, brangle, brawl(e), brall(e), braul(e)

Dennis O’Reilly (Trad, Roud 676)

The tune for this is a variant of 'Boys of Wexford' an Irish ballad commemorating the Vinegar Hill uprising. It is one of the many songs that were taken to Australia by Irish immigrants. Shirley Collins recorded it in London, England, for her magnificent 1960 LP False True Lovers

Ann Howdon at The Bridge Folk Club, 30 March 2026

Maids When You’re Young Never Wed An Old Man (Trad)

This has versions dating back to the 1750s and variants can be found all over the English-speaking world. Great fun

Tony Gillam at The Bridge Folk Club, 13 April 2026

Instant Poet (Written by Tony)

Tony got the idea for this when he was in a pub once (just once?) on a very cold night. When he put his scarf on somebody came up to him and said the scarf had turned him into an instant poet. An odd remark but a good title for a song

Teddy Cuthbert at The Bridge Folk Club, 19 January 2026

The Little Piece Of Wang (Trad)

‘Wang’ is tough leather, often in the shape of a strip, maybe a thong or a bootlace. Or maybe it’s something else in the context of this song because it tells us about how when God sewed up Adam and Eve, Adam was left with an extra little piece of wang, and Eve was left with a gap. Ever since then, men have very kindly sought to lend women a bit of their wang to fill the gap

22 June 2026 at The Bridge Folk Club – Singaround: singers, musicians, residents, visitors and audience

As always, there will be no pressure to perform. Get up and do a spot if you want or just sit back, relax and have a lovely night with good friends and great music

All we ask if you do a spot is that you contribute something that fits the spirit of folk music – and that doesn’t mean it must be ‘traditional’; plenty of very talented people are writing superb new material that we love to hear

Hope to see you there

Gan canny

NB: We don’t have a card reader – please be traditional and bring cash
