Gosforth Civic Theatre

Gosforth Civic Theatre Gosforth Civic Theatre, your home for powerful performances, live music and family entertainment.
(1)

Opened in 2016, Gosforth Civic Theatre (GCT) is an independent arts venue, café bar, events space and community hub three miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne city centre. GCT programmes high-quality theatre, memorable live music events and diverse performances. GCT is a unique social enterprise; income from ticket sales, space rental, donations and food and drink sales is used to provide opportunit

ies for young people and people with learning disabilities to train, perform, and belong, ultimately creating the world they want to live in. It was founded by disability arts charity Liberdade community development trust (pronounced lib-er-dar-jie). Founded in 2003, Liberdade began as an apprenticeship scheme to support and enable a group of young people with learning disabilities to set up and run their own theatre company. In 2012 the company members wanted to open a theatre where everyone was welcome, they wanted to have jobs in their theatre and to provide the opportunities they’d had for other young people, so Gosforth Civic Theatre became a reality. Now, those company members play an essential role in its governance and future direction.

🚪✨ Do you step through the Portals? ✨🚪

Four giant arches. Four seasons. One very colourful way into .

Bursting with colour, light, bubbles, sound, snow and playful surprises, our four seasonal Portals turned the festival site into something a little more magical and VERY Instagrammable.

Created by Bridge Creative, an award-winning social enterprise supporting autistic adults and learning-disabled adults into meaningful employment; our Autumn Portal was co-created and built with people connected to Gosforth Civic Theatre and Arcadea community groups alongside Bridge Creative.

Bridge Creative also created paid opportunities for its learning-disabled members, who helped build the Autumn arch, install it all four portals, derig and supported across the festival weekend.

So yes, the Portals looked LUSH. But we love them even more for the people, creativity and opportunities built into them. 💚 A whole lot of NOVUM magic.

What can a public venue be? 🩵

For Rosie, GCT became a place to learn new skills, build confidence and feel like she belonged.

From working in the cafe to travelling here independently, her time at GCT helped her grow in confidence and prepare for her next step at Choice College.

“I feel really proud and happy. I’ve got a place here to be who I am.”

On Friday 2nd September 2016, Gosforth Civic Theatre officially opened its doors for the first time 💛🧡❤️💙

It was the culmination of 5 months of hard graft since getting the keys to Gosforth Civic Hall in April that year, as we welcomed in friends and family to toast a huge moment for Liberdade, but also the rebirth and reimagining of a significant local venue, creating what we hoped would be a valued public space that would bring the community together and create real impact in the area.

10 years and over 324,000 visitors later, GCT has become part of everyday life in Gosforth: somewhere familiar, welcoming and open to everyone.

It is a place where teenagers rehearse after school. Where people meet friends. Where families experience live performance on their doorstep. Where community groups gather. Where people work, volunteer and take part side by side. Where you can come in for a drink and stay a while, without needing a reason to. And where world-class artists perform on your doorstep.

Love gaming? Find your people at GCT 🎮

Gaming Social is a weekly drop-in for young people who want to play games, chat about the things they love and meet other gamers in a friendly space.

We’ve built up a huge collection of consoles and games over the years, from Mega Drive, Spectrum and NES to PS5 and VR, so there’s plenty to play. We also run regular Super Smash Bros. tournaments on the big screen!

It’s just nice to have somewhere to play games with people who get why you love them!

Tuesdays during term time | 1 Sep – 15 Dec

One space, lots of possibilities 💚

Our spaces at GCT can look very different depending on what’s happening here: a theatre for a conference, a studio for a workshop, a courtyard for a celebration, or the cafe for a meeting.

We’ve hosted weddings, parties, gigs, community groups and plenty in between, and we love seeing people make the space their own.

Planning something? Get in touch and let’s see what we can do!

A little spotlight on our coffee! ☕️

Since April, Northside Coffee Roasters has been supplying the beans you’ll find in the grinder at GCT Cafe. We chose their delicious and moreish single-origin Colombian, a classic South American roast from Tolima and Huila, for its smooth balance of red fruit, nuts, and caramel that's perfect in everything from flat whites to long blacks.

So, next time you’re stopping by for a coffee, you’ll know exactly where it comes from 🤎
