Shieldfield Art Works

Shieldfield Art Works Art. Theology. Community Activism. A project of the Methodist Church. We gladly welcome people of all backgrounds to participate in our programme.

Shieldfield Art Works (or ‘SAW’) is an arts organisation based in Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne. SAW operates on the intersection of contemporary art, theological reflection and community activism. As both an arts space and a project of the Methodist Church, we are committed to understanding how these three spheres can speak, interact and learn from each other. SAW believes art and creativity are integral parts of human life, and with art’s unique ability to articulate, question and enquire, we can enact positive change in our communities and the world. Shieldfield Art Work’s broad programme includes developing high quality art exhibitions, events, workshops, conferences and publications. Although we support all forms of art making and development, Socially Engaged Art is integral to our practice as an organisation, and is often used to discuss, question and give voice to local and global issues. We have a longstanding commitment to our community of Shieldfield, an area which has undergone rapid urban development. We also support emerging artists by providing opportunities for development, curatorial support and exhibition opportunities. SAW works with people of all faiths and none – artists, schools, universities, community members, charities, churches, community groups, artistic collectives and other partners.

Sanctuary // Peace Sunday

Sunday 20th September // 7pm - 8.15pm

Alongside other Christians and churches around the world, Sanctuary will be marking Peace Sunday, through songs, prayer, and quiet reflection. We’ll be reflecting what it looks like to strive for peace in an increasingly divided world, and discern how we can be peacemakers in our communities. We will also pray for conflict zones around the world.

🕊

Sanctuary is a relaxed space for Christian worship that's open to anyone - a chance to step away from the noise of life and draw closer to God through music, reflection, discussion, and reading the Bible. Whether you're a lifelong Christian, taking the first steps of exploring spirituality, or simply in need of a reflective moment, you are welcome at Sanctuary.

Craft Action Collective: Human/Machine Photomontage*

Tuesday 15th September, 6:30 - 8pm & Monday 5th October, 1:45 - 3:45pm

What if technology was designed to give us more time to rest, play and enjoy life? In a workshop led by artist Jenny Mc Namara and inspired by the work of artist Hannah Höch, we'll experiment with photographs, found imagery, pattern and ink to create strange, playful and imaginative machines of our own. Cut, combine and transform images to invent a machine that could change how we experience work, rest, or time. Could it give you more free time? Make work easier? Help you slow down? Or simply make time for doing absolutely nothing?

Come and experiment with photos, patterns, ink and paper. No experience needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to experiment.

(* a photomontage is a combination of photos, found images and drawing combined to create a new piece of art)

The funding will enable us to make our building fully wheelchair accessible, and we're excited to be able to make our space significantly more welcoming 👩‍🦽

Today at Shieldfield Grows we dug some small holes next to our trees and gave them a much needed drink directly to their roots, we chopped the tops off our hedge to help people see into the garden better, we harvested courgettes, lettuce and little round cucumbers and we started the seed viability tests for our seed-bank to see which seeds are good to use next year.
