Shieldfield Art Works

Shieldfield Art Works Art. Theology. Community Activism. A project of the Methodist Church. We gladly welcome people of all backgrounds to participate in our programme.

Shieldfield Art Works (or ‘SAW’) is an arts organisation based in Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne. SAW operates on the intersection of contemporary art, theological reflection and community activism. As both an arts space and a project of the Methodist Church, we are committed to understanding how these three spheres can speak, interact and learn from each other. SAW believes art and creativity a

re integral parts of human life, and with art’s unique ability to articulate, question and enquire, we can enact positive change in our communities and the world. Shieldfield Art Work’s broad programme includes developing high quality art exhibitions, events, workshops, conferences and publications. Although we support all forms of art making and development, Socially Engaged Art is integral to our practice as an organisation, and is often used to discuss, question and give voice to local and global issues. We have a longstanding commitment to our community of Shieldfield, an area which has undergone rapid urban development. We also support emerging artists by providing opportunities for development, curatorial support and exhibition opportunities. SAW works with people of all faiths and none – artists, schools, universities, community members, charities, churches, community groups, artistic collectives and other partners.

Sanctuary // Creative Prayer

Sunday 21st June // 7pm - 8.15pm

Join us for a quiet evening to explore what prayer means, and try out new and creative ways of praying. We'll be joined by members of the local Methodist Circuit and have a chance to pray for the work that goes on in this place. All are welcome, regardless of whether you've ever prayed before or not!

This month we’ve launched our June Appeal, to help us reach our goal of £1,000 per month from regular donors to sustain our work!

We’re not talking thousands of pounds here - even a few quid a month makes a big impact.

£10 a month covers materials for every Craft Action Collective session. Craft Action Collective sessions focus on using art and craft activities to think deeply and respond to injustice in a gentle and careful way. We think about stories in the news or issues that are being highlighted through SAW’s exhibitions, and be creative together. Louisa, a Craft Action Collective participant, said “Craft Action Collective is a very special, welcoming place for people to create, connect, think and learn... I feel seen and not so alone.”

By becoming a regular donor, you’ll be directly supporting creative activism that enables people to change the world around them.

Today at Shieldfield Grows we added in some perennials to a section of the bed that has been used as a thorough fair but is not a walkway, pruned our beautiful white rose and cut down lots of huge buddleja plants.

It was great to be joined by The Methodist Church last month at The Late Shows - and we love this video they've produced about our current exhibition, Many Hands! ✋

You can read more about the exhibition (and our work in general) at the link in the post 🎨

This June we’ve launched an appeal to get to £1,000 per month from regular donors, to help keep everything that goes on at SAW going.

A regular donation doesn’t need to be a huge amount - every little helps, and goes a long way!

Just £5 per month enables us to host a whole year of our community lunches (Lettuce Eat): meals that bring together local residents, budding gardeners, volunteers, and visitors.

Food tells stories: of homegrown ingredients, family recipes, and dishes that represent far flung cultures and communities. We share these stories as we gather around the table; over these meals we build community and understanding for one another (and eat some damn tasty food).

By becoming a regular giver, you’re playing your part in helping this pocket of loving community thrive.

So don’t delay, donate today! saw-newcastle.org/give-to-saw

Today at Shieldfield Grows we harvested radishes (which we enjoyed at Lettuce Eat), planted courgettes and strawberries, weeded many a path, gave the apple trees a bit more room around their bases, staked some sunflowers and enjoyed the heavens opening to water the garden. We are ready for our National Garden Scheme opening this Saturday from 11am-3pm, do come along to support us!!

Introducing our June Appeal 🌻

This month we've set a goal: to hit £1,000 per month from regular givers.

We want to make our funding more sustainable to help us secure SAW's future and give us time and space to focus on the work we do here.

Every little helps - even the equivalent of a coffee and cake makes a huge difference to our work! We'll be spotlighting some examples over the coming month.

Please consider becoming a regular giver if you value the work we do - and if you sign up to be a giver this month, we’ll give you a free goodie bag as a thank you!

CRAFT ACTION COLLECTIVE // POSTERS AND ZINES

Join us for creative workshops with artist Toby Lloyd, where we’ll explore attitudes to work (of all kinds, paid and unpaid), how we value ‘free’ time and issues surrounding the possibility of a Universal Basic Income. Over two sessions, we’ll make posters and zines thinking about:

Everyday rituals - ordinary, often unnoticed actions we carry out everyday, like eating, sleeping, looking at our phones or walking. How might our everyday rituals be different if free time was valued differently by society?

Universal Basic Income - a policy where everyone in society would receive regular and unconditional monthly payments regardless of their means and without any requirements to work or on how the money is used. What impact would this have on you and the rest of society?

Starting in June, Craft Action Collective will have a new rhythm: we are starting a regular Craft Action Collective session during the daytime, on the first Monday of every month, 1:45pm - 3:45pm (except August). This will be in addition to our evening session every third Tuesday of the month. You can find out dates of upcoming Craft Action Collective sessions on our website.

Daytime sessions: Monday 1 June & 6 July, 1:45 - 3:45pm

Evening sessions: Tuesday 16 June, 6:30 - 8pm

Evening sessions are a repeat of the daytime sessions - you are welcome to come to both daytime and evening sessions.

Free session for adults, no experience needed - just bring enthusiasm. It's helpful if you let us know you're planning on coming so we can ensure we have enough materials - or you can just turn up.
