Sketchbook of Oman came about through my watercolours of palm trees painted on location in Key West, Florida.

The original watercolour I painted of Key West, similar to the sketchbook study seen here was stolen in 2001 from my gallery in Eldon Gardens, the week before we left.

Key West, Florida

I sat on South Beach and painted a 12″ x 9″ watercolour in bright sunshine. However, as indicated in this sketchbook watercolour, dark threatening clouds on the horizon were gaining momentum with the warm strong winds.

By the time I’d finished, the heavens opened and we ran for shelter.

The sketch I painted became a much larger watercolour studio painting. But the story of my Key West painting doesn’t end here.

Stolen Painting

Four years later I had the original painting of South Beach, Key West stolen just a week before we left Eldon Gardens! It was framed up and on the wall in my gallery in Eldon Garden Shopping Mall when thieves walked out with it.

In 1997 Susan and I decided to visit the Camusdarach Beach near Mallaig where some of the scenes from the film Local Hero were shot. We checked in at a bed and breakfast in Mallaig and found the beach just as the sun was beginning to set.

There was hardly anyone around apart from a young lady sitting in the dunes, playing a Celtic melody on her violin. All we could hear was the gentle sound of waves lapping on the beach and her notes accompanying them.

The next morning we returned to Camusdarach Beach where I painted a couple of watercolours. This time the colours were completely different, white skies, turquoise sea and bright blue skies.

A watercolour of winter trees painted in my leather bound sketchbook.

The scene is typical of many of the paintings that were inspired by my winter walks with our German Shepherd Max.

We held an exhibition of the paintings, all of which sold. This is the invitation we sent out at the time.

Another page from my handmade sketchbook where every painting represents a year since I’ve known Susan.

This page represents Venice 1994, when I painted a watercolour of La Piazzetta di San Marco around 6am in August. It was very hot and humid, not the best month to see Venice.

1993 was the year Susan and I were married.

By the time the year had ended, a print publisher called Di Rollo had published several of my watercolours of Edinburgh as limited edition prints.

The first was the Grassmarket which sold out in less than a year.

We quickly built up quite a collection which included Glassgow, the Forth Rail Bridge and Newcastle.

Sketchbook watercolours painted on location in Pollenca, Mallorca.

These were preparation studies for a series of commissions for a client who has a property in Pollenca.

Two of the sketches were also worked up as larger studio paintings which have been published as limited edition prints of the Calvari Steps.

A sketching trip and day out with my ever keen grandson Harry on Holy Island.

It included a first time visit to Emmanuel Head, one of the earliest daymarks built in Britain.

A landmark used by ships for daytime navigation to avoid dangerous rocks and find the safe channel into the harbour.
