✨ Exciting announcement!

North East writer Alison Carr has won a prestigious Peter Shaffer Commission to develop a brand new play with Unfolding Theatre.

'That Friday Feeling (but Friday is the Apocalypse)' promises to be a darkly funny play about closures, endings and what we leave behind.

Set in the offices of the London Gazette as the world starts to fall apart, it asks: what happens when everything we thought was permanent starts to disappear?

The £7,294 commission, administered by the National Theatre in collaboration with the Sir Peter Shaffer Charitable Foundation, will support the next stage of development.

And we’re very excited to see where this extraordinary idea takes us. 💛

Could you nominate Unfolding Theatre for a North East Culture Award? 💛

We’re asking our friends, audiences and supporters to nominate Unfolding Theatre for a North East Culture Award 2026!

We’d particularly love nominations for The Arts Council England Award, which celebrates the arts and cultural experiences that have made a positive difference to people’s lives.

Maybe Dear Sunderland was your highlight of the year? Or Here Be Dragons? Did Clear the Way make you reframe your year? Has your child enjoyed one of our youth theatre programmes? Or perhaps you’ve experienced another Unfolding project that stayed with you.

You can also nominate us in the Performance of the Year category - for Dear Sunderland, Here Be Dragons or another category that feels right.

The more nominations we receive, the better - so if Unfolding Theatre has made you laugh, think, connect, create or see your world differently, we’d be incredibly grateful for your support.

Thank you! 💛

Stuck for things to do with the kids this summer?

Then explore our recent project - Don't Get Lost in the Portal - with the East End Story Makers!

Working together with the Unfolding Theatre team, our young theatre-makers co-created this new audio story by developing the script, creating artwork, and producing the eventual audio experience (available to listen to below).

An inspirational bit of listening for youngsters this summer (and a cracking story that will make them laugh too)!

Don't forget that East End Story Makers returns in September:

📅 Wednesdays (during term term-time)
⏱️ 4.00pm - 5.30pm

This summer, we're revisiting the Unfolding Theatre archive and reintroducing a few of our past productions.

Next up - A Street Like This!

A Street Like This premiered at The Fire Station in June 2023 and toured regionally in autumn 2023 to Gosforth Civic Theatre, Thornley Village Centre (a No More Nowt Culture Hub), Jarrow Focus, The Tute and 17Nineteen.

Written by Alison Carr (Finalist: Women’s Prize for Playwriting 2022) with music by Ross Millard (The Futureheads), the show was co-created with a community company: a group of local Sunderland residents.

A Street Like This is a show about the unexpected friendships that arise when something unforeseen happens, changing the way people define themselves forever and throwing them into a world of new possibilities.

This music-filled theatre production reminds us that even at a time of social division, we have more in common than keeps us apart.

It won Performance of the Year at the 2023 North East Culture Awards
