Young Designers is now open for applications!🎉

Explore how designers bring theatre to life in our weekly introductory masterclasses! Guided by industry professionals, you’ll get hands-on experience in stage and scenic design, costume design, hair and make-up design, and work with elements of technical theatre.

The course runs twice each year and covers two different topics. Please note that the two terms are treated as separate courses, and you can take part in just one, or both!

🎨 September – December 2026: Set and Scenic Design
Learn the principles of building a world for a performance. Develop set ideas, create mood boards, build model boxes, try scenic painting and make props.

💇‍♀️ January – March 2027: Costume, hair and SFX makeup design.
Understand the principles of designing and sourcing costumes for performance. Develop costume ideas, create mood boards, observe demonstrations, experiment with different design techniques, build your own costumes, try your hand at special effects make up.

If you are looking for the perfect activity to kick off the summer holidays, there are only a handful of spots remaining for our Little Creators group!

During the week, the group will take part in drama workshops to build their confidence, as well as craft-making sessions to explore their imagination, all centred around Northern folktales. The week will be full of activities and games, which will introduce them to theatre, while making new friends and encouraging creativity.

Applications are now open for our Young Designers, Young Directors, and Young Creatives cohorts starting again in September.

If you are ages 13-17 and passionate about all aspects of theatre, this is your chance to get involved, get creative, and build your skills in a supportive and fun environment.

Discounted and free bursary places are available for Young Designers and Young Directors, with Young Creatives being FREE to take part. Financial support is available with the cost of travelling to Northern Stage.
