We actually can't believe we are saying this ... BREAK A LEG for your opening night ⭐

VocalCoachSA students Jonathan Blaine Shore and Dezlenne Ulster-Weale are both performing in this year's Pantomime - Cinderella.

After nearly two years, we are so excited to finally be able to sit as a collective audience and witness the lights go down and the curtain go up!

We're so proud of these two humans. Have the most magical time on stage doing what you do best.

This calming exercise is a great way to warm up the voice. You can use any vowel when singing it, but we advise starting on an 'ooh' - as in 'boot'. Ideally, you should not slide between the notes.

Let us know in the comments if you've tried this out. 🎹

"With great power, comes great responsibility" - Uncle Ben

Sometimes the songs that we fall in love with and have every intention of belting out like Patti LuPone just don't 'come out' like we want them too. 😜

Vocal Vocab' 📖

This Italian term is used as a musical direction that is important for both the singer and the accompanist. It is prevalent in musical theatre because it allows the singer to emote without having to worry about keeping strict time. It also helps the accompanist support the performer so that the two stay in sync.

Anatomy 101 🤓 - The Paranasal Sinuses

The sinuses are small air pockets situated behind the forehead, cheekbones and nose. They have the wonderful task of producing mucus. Mucus is one of the ways that the body defends itself by trapping environmental pathogens and germs.

Seasonal changes can also wreak havoc on our mucus production and generally make us instantly miserable. Fortunately, there are hundreds of antihistamines that we can take to keep the mucus at bay. However, as singers, we always need to be aware of the side effects that come with taking certain medications. This is one of the times that you REALLY have to chat to an ENT or GP to get the correct prescription.

Are you struggling with your singing journey? 🎤

Do you feel like you've hit a wall with your technique, a new song, or a vocal style? Our advice is to rather embrace the challenge than fight it. Take a break, and reshift your focus and strategy. This will allow you to grow and move forward.

Interval identification in music is one of those little skills that are so incredibly useful! It is great for sight-singing, harmonising, and writing music. To know them makes you a better musician!

Musicnotes.com has created a fun and useful resource to help teach you to recognize intervals. They explain the interval, describe it brilliantly and provide a sound clip from a well-known song to help you learn and identify it quickly. A few practice rounds are all it takes for you to understand and hear them. It’s absolutely worth it!

- Do you sometimes want to just block it all out?

Noise cancelling headphones are the perfect way to zone in and zone out whilst recording. They are also important because they prevent sound from bleeding through and being heard through your microphone.

Pictured in this post are the 'Sony CH710N Noise Cancelling Headphones'. They are available from Incredible Connection in South Africa.

Vocal Vocab' 📖

When singing in a whistle register the vocal cords don't oscillate, but rather become fully taut at their maximum length. The sound is then produced when we make small gaps and the air is leaked through them.
