✨ATTENTION ✨

It’s not often we do a big post, but we thought it’s best to keep yous updated.

▪️What’s up Giggle Water?

So you might have noticed that Giggle Water is continuing to expand/grow? Maybe you’ve been with us since the beginning (appreciate you) or you’re a recent fan (welcome 💜) - either way, it’s been our goal to continue bringing you some of the best comedy nights in Newcastle.

Heck, we’re now at the point where our biggest night is happening on the 8th September, it’s going to be our biggest use of venue space, and yet, it still comes with challenges as a small business.

A mix of cost of living and lack of funding has seen us working hard constantly to bring the events that you’ve enjoyed so much previously. This is where we’re being totally honest.

If you like, love, enjoy or even just ‘think’ about going out to a stand-up comedy night, nothing would make us happier. In a time where we’re seeing costs soar, our goal at Giggle Water is to keep putting on the comedy nights at an affordable price, but this does undoubtedly come with great challenges on our side.

Everyone deserves good quality entertainment and we can only achieve that with your support 💯

▪️Have you thought about funding?

Of course! Unfortunately, even this comes with challenges. You’d be surprised to hear how often live comedy gets swept under the rug.

Even a comedy club based in Manchester was denied funding during lockdown because they were deemed ‘not culturally significant’ - the cheek!

▪️So what can be done?

Spread the word, and this post. Tell your friends, your family, your neighbours, your colleagues to support live comedy.

Even if you’ve never given a comedy night a second thought, why not! We can guarantee some of the best nights out come from comedy (yes we are biased).

The more folk know, the more we can keep the industry alive, meaning the more we can continue expanding, supporting comedians who deserve to be seen and bringing even more events than just monthly comedy nights 👀

We could even be bringing food to our events in the future 🍕

If you’d like to support us as a small business and events provider, we’d deeply appreciate it to see you guys at the upcoming event on Friday 8th September 2023, you can find the link to tickets here 🎟️ - https://skiddle.com/e/36398256

Today, May 17th, is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia; commonly abbreviated to IDAHOBIT. The date marks when Homosexuality was removed from classification as a disease by the World Health Organisation in 1990.

Concerted efforts against hatred towards the LGBTQ+ community is needed now more than ever. Figures released by the Office for National Statistics for the 2021/22 period showed that the reported hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people in England & Wales rose by the largest amount since they started being recorded separately a decade ago.

The 2021/22 period recorded 30,507 hate crime incidents against LGBTQ+ people. Of that 20,152 crimes were classified as hate against “Sexual Orientation” and 4,355 under “Transgender identity”. This represents a 43% increase in total reports over the previous year. This is the largest year on year increase seen in a decade of reports with the 20/21 period showing “only” a 19% increase over the prior year.

When looking at hate crimes perpetrated against Transgender people the year on year rise was a shocking 56%. Out of all the categories that Hate crimes are classified under, including race, religion, and disability, it was Transgender hate crime that saw the largest increase. It was also the category that had the highest proportion of violence against the person including stalking, harassment, and physical violence. 56% of incidents of hate towards transgender people included violence compared to the average of 41% of total hate crimes.

When looking at these statistics there are confounding factors that can influence the results. Reporting of hate crime has improved in the past decade including more victims coming forward, police more accurately categorising crimes as hate motivated, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on crime reporting. However a sharp rise in anti LGBTQ+, and specifically anti-trans, hate tallies with reports from other sources as well. It is clear this is an issue that is getting worse and worse.

[Image Description: A graphic with a dark grey gradient background. There is pink text reading: Hate Crimes against LGBTQ+ people have risen 43% in the last year. Transgender hate crimes are the fastest rising category” Below that in black “Source ONS England & Wales 2021/22”. In the bottom right corner is the logo for the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia which is a pink triangle surrounded by black with an black exclamation point in the centre and the text underneath “International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia”]
