BLAKE’S CIRCUS FIRST OUTING WAS ON 12TH APRIL 2018 WITH A WORK IN PROGRESS SHARING AT NO FIT STATE’S CIRCUS VILLAGE IN NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME
CIRCUS, PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE
Project in Newcastle-under-Lyme in partnership with New Vic Theatre.
Circus Past Present and Future is a project run by New Vic Theatre, celebrating 250 years of Circus in 2018. Bringing together national and international partners incvliudong NoFit State Circus and the Victoria and Albert Museum with circus expert such as Academic Advisor Professor Vanessa Toumlin (University of Sheffield) this will be an extraordinary year of events taking place in Newcastle-under-Lyme that will spectacularly showcase the art form in its anniversary year.
Taking place between March and August, the programme will see Newcastle-under-Lyme, birthplace of Philip Astley, the father of modern circus, become a hub of celebratory activity as it joins with the national celebrations of circus.

Please join us for a work in progress sharing of a new show being created by Gavin Marshall, Jon Hicks, Alex Rigg, Peter Coyte and Sarah Jean Couzens.

Inspired by the fact that a young William Blake, the poet and artist was almost certainly present at Astley’s spectaculars of 1768 onwards, the idea behind Blake’s Circus is to create a show that draws on the contrasting strengths and brilliances of both men.
