Asia’s Day of Death.
The other side of the book shows the more personal Sri Lankan’s point of view, using the photos taken in the Tsunami museum. Using overlays of textures, writing and images on the spreads to represent faded memories and how the tsunami destroyed most of the southern coast of Sri Lanka. @ Nottingham Trent University

Asia’s Day of Death.
All my research for this project was taken at the Telwetta Tsunami Photo Museum, and the project was inspired by the lady featured on the opposite page- Mrs. Kamani de Silva. This lady lost her home and family to the disaster, and set up a small museum in the ruined building that was once her home- standing directly on the most affected beach in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province.

While Mrs. de Silva showed us around this museum she told us the stories of those who survived the Tsunami, including herself. Being faced with numerous handwritten messages and plees to missing loved ones, I knew I wanted to do a project to bring awareness back to such a large part of Sri Lanka’s living memory that tore the Southern Province apart. @ Nottingham Trent University

Asia’s Day of Death.
This side of the book shows the UK’s viewpoint: the 2004 Tsunami is very much old news here as we weren’t affected and is no longer thought about. This side is a take on a ‘boring’ government report that portrays the UK to only care about the efforts they put in for the Tsunami recovery.

The headings and type oppose that of the Sri Lanka side, furthering the contrast between the two views. While the UK shows the extensive list of missing people, Sri Lanka shows the missing faces and stories from loved ones. @ Nottingham Trent University

Asia’s Day of Death.
Concept: The 2004 Tsunami still hugely affects most of Asia, yet in the UK it is merely facts and figures hidden in old government reports. Thousands of people were displaced by the devastation of the Tsunami, and after volunteering in Sri Lanka I was faced with the knowledge that thousands of people are still missing.
