A Victorian silver travelling communion cup and wafer disc by the gothic architects and silversmiths John Hardman & Co. Augustus Pugin designed many pieces for the company until his death in 1852, although his influence remained ingrained within Hardman for evermore. These two items are both hallmarked for Birmingham 1878.

A substantial hallmarked silver tray in a fitted box, of Newbury interest. The tray is engraved with the coat of arms and motto of Newbury, and the inscription reads: ‘presented to the Mayor and Mayoress of Newbury, councillor and Mrs J Rankin, By a Number of their Friends and Fellow Townsmen, in Recognition of the Services Rendered by them, to the Town during the years 1900, 1901, 1902.’ There is a Primary school in Newbury called John Rankin, and this tray passed to them before being presented to a long standing Headmaster in 1980. It then passed by descent before being sold. As much as I would love this tray to be bought by someone associated with John Rankin, the significant weight of the tray will not help the price for the faint hearted! I have therefore decided to preserve the memory and provenance of the tray in this post, in case the new owner would prefer it without the inscription! It is 65cm at its widest, and weighs over 135 ozt. The tray is hallmarked for London 1900, and the maker is James Dixon.

A rare 19th Century flatware pattern, which Ian Pickford refers to as ‘Scottish King’s Shape (Rococo End) pattern of unknown name’. The examples I have are hallmarked for Robert Gray, Glasgow 1844, same as the illustration in Pickford’s book. Interestingly though Pickford refers to them as single struck, whilst mine are double struck. For Sale.
