I’ll give you a clue: it’s all about colour, but not the kind you knit with.

Before we get there, there’s a finished cowl, a window in Westminster that changes colour with the tide, and a weekend at Yarndale.

Which shade of Cumulus would you lead with?

This first finished Fire Acer Cowl uses three shades, knitted into pure autumn, and it’s got me itching to cast on another. If you haven’t started yet, the KAL Live replay is waiting for you, so there’s still plenty of time to join in.

Would you knit in these colours?

New Dawn by Mary Branson hangs in Westminster Hall and celebrates the campaign for women’s votes. Its light shifts on a 12.5-hour cycle, matched to the rise and fall of the Thames, so it never looks quite the same twice. It’s the most extraordinary colour story I’ve seen in a long time.

What do you think we’re loading into the van? 🚐📦

Ever been cornered by someone who’s just had a delivery?

Sorry in advance. There was no way to show you these one at a time, so you’re getting them all at once, in the order I grabbed them off the shelf. No structure. No plan. Just a lot of colour and a lot of enthusiasm.

Every one of these earned its place here, and we’d happily talk you through each individually if you had the afternoon spare.

Does September still smell like a new pencil case? ✏️

There’s something about this time of year that gets everyone, whether you’ve got children heading back or not. The fresh start feeling. The urge to buy stationery you absolutely do not need.

Swipe for a palette built entirely on that.

Deep ink blue, straight from the nib of a brand new pen.

It’s the anchor of this whole palette — dark enough to ground the brighter shades, but with far more warmth than a true navy.

The colour of the very first line on a very clean page.

Pencil yellow is warm rather than acidic, which is what makes it work.

Think of a row of freshly sharpened pencils rather than anything neon. A brilliant accent shade in hand knitting yarn — a stripe, a colourwork yoke, or a whole cardigan if you’re brave.

My favourite of the four, and the one nobody expects.

That soft, slightly chalky pink — dusty rather than sweet, and far more sophisticated than pink usually gets credit for. It’s the shade that stops this palette being obvious.

A proper apple red, polished and placed hopefully on the desk.

It’s the colour that gives this palette its confidence — deep and true rather than orange-leaning, and gorgeous against the ink blue.

Navy, yellow, pink and red. It shouldn’t work as a palette and it completely does — grown-up enough for a cardigan, playful enough to stop it being boring.

Eraser pink is the one I’d cast on first, and I’d like it noted that I stand by that. So which one takes you straight back? Tell me below 👇

Soft or shocking? 🎨

Same pink. Same yarn. One turned all the way up.

Meet Candy Floss and Fuchsia, both West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 ply — which we went properly deep on during this week’s Live. Same base, same softness, same everything. Only the volume is different.

There’s no right answer here, but there is a very revealing one. Some of us reach straight for the soft version — the pink that sits quietly and goes with everything and never shouts. Others go directly for the one that can be seen from space.

I’ve watched people do this in the shop for fifteen years and it’s never once been a hesitation. You know which one is yours before you’ve properly looked.

The interesting bit is that both make a beautiful pair of socks. They just make you a completely different person while you’re wearing them.

How often do you think about knitting? 🧶

Be honest. There’s the actual knitting time, which is fine and normal and nobody questions. And then there’s everything else. The pattern you’re mentally sizing while you’re meant to be listening in a meeting. The yarn you’re deciding about in the shower. The three rows you’re planning on the drive home.

I don’t think I’ve had a day in fifteen years where it hasn’t crossed my mind at least once. Not all day. But every day.

The best bit is that it doesn’t feel like a lot until you say it out loud. Then it sounds slightly unhinged, and then everyone else says “oh, same” and you realise you’re in extremely good company.
