Shaw House Experience learning, enjoyment and inspiration at this beautiful Elizabethan Grade I listed building Shaw House, Church Road, Newbury, United Kingdom, RG14 2DR

Shaw House was built in 1581 by Newbury clothier Thomas Dolman. This fine Elizabethan building was home to successive Dolman families, the flamboyant Duke of Chandos and the Andrews and Farquhar families. Shaw House then began a new life as a school for generations of local children. However in 1985 Shaw House was evacuated due to concerns about the structure of the building. Following a £6million Restoration Project you can now enjoy Shaw House!

Our NEW and UPDATED guidebook now features the various developments that have been taking place at Shaw House. See the newly dressed rooms and take a view of the Tudor Gardens from above. A true celebration of what has been achieved at Shaw House in the last two years.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT!

Freddie McAlpine-Riddell has created this beautiful artwork named 'Heritage' which features in the Sculpture Exhibition currently on display at Shaw House.

“Created as the centrepiece for a fashion runway show and since exhibited at both Metamorphika Studio and the London Art Biennale, Heritage is constructed entirely from upcycled scrap metal. This sculptural horse head stands as a monument to labour and transformation. Horses were among humanity’s earliest tools: engines of transport, agriculture, warfare, and industry. With the advance of mechanisation, they were gradually displaced, rendered unnecessary by metal and machine. Heritage, composed of discarded industrial remnants, closes that historical loop. Here, metal does not replace the horse—it becomes it, as the materials that once contributed to the workhorse’s redundancy now resurrect its form.”

See Freddie’s work at The Altered States Sculpture Exhibition, on display at Shaw House and FREE to view. Open every day until 27th September 2026, 11am – 4pm. Shaw House is also open, entry fees to visit inside the house apply. The café and grounds are free to enter.

Calling all young witches, wizards, and magical creatures… The Shaw House School of Enchantment will be opening its doors once again!

Discover your school house, create spooky crafts in the Great Hall and test your magic skills with family friendly games.

Plus, trick or treating and a spellbinding story time to round up the evening.

Saturday 31 October | Doors open 6pm. Event: 6.20pm – 8.30pm | £8 per child, one accompanying adult free. Additional adults £2 each.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT!

Katie Netley is a ceramic artist, potter and teacher — but really, she’s a clay storyteller.

“Clay runs through everything I do. I make. I experiment. I get gloriously messy. And I invite others to do the same. My work feeds me creatively and emotionally, and in turn I create spaces where other people can soften, breathe out and have some safe, joyful playtime of their own. No pressure. No perfection. Just hands in clay and the world slowing down for a moment.
Clay is honest. It’s grounding. It asks you to show up as you are. It holds stories, memories and mischief in equal measure.

At the heart of everything I create is play. I believe that if we want to feel truly well — steady, connected and alive — we have to protect that childlike part of ourselves. The part that explores. The part that laughs. The part that makes things simply because it feels good.

Free. Joyful. A little muddy.

Just as we were at the very beginning.”

The overthrow of our historic gate is having some repair work done off site. As such, you will notice the front gate looking a little different for a while. Thank you for your patience whilst we carry out these works.

The gates and pillars remain in place, so please take care if driving through as the width restriction remains. General visitors, please continue to use our main car park which is the entrance before the historic gate along Church Road.
