With the fingerboard now shaped, it's time for the final finishing.
Using scrapers and fine abrasives, the surface is refined until it's perfectly smooth and ready for playing. A well-finished fingerboard not only feels effortless under the fingers but also reduces string wear and helps the instrument perform at its best.
It's another small step in the workshop that has a big impact on the finished result.

Not every day in the workshop is about making new instruments.
Set up work is just as important, and today I'm shooting a fingerboard. This process creates the correct relief and curve so the instrument is comfortable to play, the strings have the right clearance, and unwanted buzzing is avoided.
It's a small detail that most players never see, but one that makes a real difference every time they pick up their instrument.

Recently, I had this beautiful violin come into the workshop because the owner felt something wasn't quite right with its sound.
After a careful examination, I found that the afterlength (the string length between the bridge and tailpiece) was a few millimetres out, which can have a noticeable effect on the instrument's response. Looking a little further, I also discovered that the fingerboard had started to come unglued, creating the potential for unwanted buzzing, and there was dried glue on the bridge that was damping the vibration of the strings.
None of these issues were major on their own, but together they were preventing the violin from performing at its best.
Sometimes, it's the smallest adjustments that make the biggest difference. If your instrument doesn't sound or feel quite as it should, it may simply need a professional assessment rather than major work.

The final stage is always one of my favourites. As the French polishing begins, the varnish gains clarity and depth, revealing the layers of colour and bringing the wood to life. It is a delicate process that enhances the character of the instrument without hiding the work beneath.

This new violin is now entering its final stages and will soon be available.

A satisfying milestone in the making of a new violin.
Drilling the peg holes is one of the final stages before the instrument can move on to fitting and set-up. It requires careful planning, accurate measurements and plenty of patience, as every detail contributes to how the violin will function.
For this instrument, I'll also be extending the antiquing by bushing the peg holes before refitting them. It's a traditional technique that will add another layer of authenticity to the instrument, giving the pegbox the natural appearance of a well-played violin that has seen generations of use.
It's these small details that help give a new instrument its own character and story.

The varnishing process is progressing well, with each coat gradually adding colour, depth and transparency to the wood. Every stage influences the final appearance of the instrument, and patience is an essential part of the process.
