I'm Emily/Emi, and I'm a Mam to a lovely almost two year old. I moved to South Wales to live with my now-husband (over the pandemic), and we moved to the Neath area 5 years ago. I started learning Welsh around the same time and am getting nearer to fluent now, but still learning! (Starting Uwch 2 course in September)

Emily/Emi dw i, Mam i 2oed hyfryd. Symudais i i Dde Cymru i byw gyda fy ngŵr (dros y pandemig), ac symudon ni i ardal Castell Nedd 5 mlynedd yn ôl. Dechrais i ddysgu Cymraeg yn y un amser, a nawr dwi'n eithaf rhugl ond dwi'n dysgu o hyd! (Dwi'n dechrau cwrs Uwch 2 ym Mis Medi).

I started singing young, I remember singing in primary school assemblies and in choirs. Then at secondary school I audtioned and joined the school Chamber Choir. We sang in many amazing places, such as St Pauls Cathedral and the Notre Dame. We even did a tour of churches and other places in Florida, USA. I took singing lessons and passed Grade 6 in Singing and Violin. I have such fond memories of that time and the Head of Music who supported me greatly to pursue my singing and music in general. Then while at university, I joined the choir at my church, singing services. I then moved to wales and lost a place to sing and had looked for a choir in the area before, but none suited, and life with a child and work is so busy. Then Simon from Musicality reached out when I'd been a little bit keen reacting to posts about Musicality Choir and pressed me to come an see and join! I'm so glad that I did.

Dechrais i ganu pan o'n i'n blentyn, yn yr ysgol gynradd mewn cynulliadau a chorau. Ac wedyn, yn yr ysgol uwchradd, gwnes i glyweliad ac ymuno â'r côr siambr yr ysgol. Gwnaethon ni canu yn llawer o leoedd anhygoel fel St Paul's Cathedral a'r Notre Dame. Aethon ni ar daith dros Florida, UDA, canu mewn elgwysi. Ro'n i'n gwneud gwersi canu a feiolin, pasiais i ganu gradd 6 a feiolin gradd 6 hefydd. Ro'n i'n hapus iawn yn y côr, a dwi'n ddiolchgar i bennaeth y gerddoriaeth fy ysgol i helpu fi dilyn fy nghanu a fy ngherddoriaeth yn gyffredinol. Yn y prifysgol, ymunais i â côr eglwys, canu gwasanaethau. Wedyn, symudais i i Gymru a cholli rhwyle i ganu. Gwnes i edrych am gôr, ond doedd dim un i fi, ac mae bywyd yn brysur gyda theulu a fy mab! Wedyn anfonodd Simon o Musicality neges ata fi i dod i ymarfer Musicality ar ôl i fi rhyngweithio â phostiadau Musicality ar Facebook. Felly, gwnes i gyda ddiolchgar.

I love that we sing a large range of pieces, and lots of fun songs. I'm excited to sing a Welsh language song soon too. Ash leads so wonderfully, naturally teaching us a whole song and then refining our sound and adjusting harmonies where it suits everyone. There's a really lovely welcoming atmosphere, and lots of new faces joining at the same time I have. I have been coming along for almost 2 months, and I wish I'd joined sooner! It gives me an opportunity to get out of the house just for me and to do something I love. It's given me the opportunity to sing as a part of a choir and perform again, without the time dedication being too much week on week. I'm so excited to be a part of something bigger where we're working towards the next concert. Rehearsals pass so quickly - we have too much fun, but get lots done! I'm hoping to go to one of the next socials to get to know people better, and then I'm excited to be able to invite friends and family to our upcoming concerts!

Mae Ash yn dilyn y côr mor rhyfeddol, yn dysgu ni holl gân yn natural dros un nos, ac wedyn mae Ash yn puro'r sain o'r côr, ac yn cymhwyso'r harmonïau i weddu i bawb. Mae awyrgylch croesawgar hyfryd yn yr ymarfeirion Musicality. Roedd llawer o wynebau newydd pan dechrais i hefyd. Dw i'n dod i Musicality ers 2 misoedd nawr, a dwi'n credu y dylwn fod wedi ymuno'n gynharach. Mae'n gyfle i fi i mynd allan (dim ond fi) a gwneud rhwybeth dwi'n dwlu ar, perfformio mewn côr, heb gormod o amser wythnos i wythnos. Dw i'n gyffrous i bod rhan o rwybeth mawr, gweithio tuag at y cyngerdd nesa. Mae ymarfeirion yn mynd yn gyflym iawn - dyn ni'n mwynhau'r amser ond gwneud llawer. Gobeithio, af i i'r digwyddiadau cymdeithasol nesa i ddod i adnabod pobl yn well, ac wedyn dwi'n cyffrous i allu gwahodd fy nheulu a ffrindiau i'n cyngherddau nesa!

Let the Magic Begin Again! Musicality Choir Returns this October...

Can you feel it in the air? That sparkle of anticipation is building because Musicality Choir is back to weave some auditory enchantment! After our heart-swelling previous concerts which, thanks to you, were absolutely sold out, we’ve been busy crafting a truly whimsical evening for our wonderful community. Prepare to be swept off your feet with a concert that feels like a heartfelt hug, blending the songs you adore from your favourite movies and musicals with the profound, soaring beauty of Karl Jenkins pieces and so much more. It's a musical fairytale we can't wait to share, and if history is any indicator, these seats will be floating away fast!

My name is Steph and music and theatre have always been a big part of my life. My passion for singing started young, joining choirs throughout primary and comprehensive school. I took singing lessons for many years and eventually turned my passion into a degree, studying Vocal and Choral Studies at the University of Wi******er. Today, I am proud to share my love of music and theatre and experience with the next generation as a director for Showcase Performing Arts Juniors, where we are currently busy fundraising for our exciting upcoming production of Matilda Junior.

My journey with Musicality started about ten years ago when I performed in musicals with Simon and Ash. We became friends, so when they decided to launch this choir joining them was a natural choice. I have been by their side since the very beginning of the choir and I am incredibly proud to see how much this wonderful choir has grown over the years.
What makes Musicality so special is it's a wonderfully diverse group of people of all ages and walks of life who come together to enjoy singing.Every rehearsal is filled with energy, laughter, and a shared passion for bringing great music to life.

For me, Musicality is much more than just a weekly singing group; it is essential to my personal wellbeing. The choir itself, the lifelong friends I have made here, and especially Simon and Ash, have formed a vital support system for me.
While I am incredibly excited about our upcoming concerts, this next one will be a little different for me. I am due to have a baby in October, so though I won't be on stage performing, I will be cheering the choir on and singing along from the sidelines with my new little one.

I’m Rog. Desperately trying to work out where the last 60+ years have gone and who the Greyhair in the mirror is. I have been many things in the past, and have lived in Wales for near 30 years. Married to a love from my teens, two kids, dogs, cats, chickens, geese, pigs, far too many hobbies (need I mention neurospicey?)

Have loved singing since I was a kid, unfortunately many others didn’t - so I stopped. Sang in some bands at college and in my 20’s, playing blues harmonica too. Then life, family etc took over and it all stopped again. Fast forward 25 years to the period before covid and I started back, playing and singing in a local acoustic open mic. Again multiple negative comments and then post covid, was told directly to my face that I couldn’t sing, never would and I should just stop and get a hobby I am good at (did I mention the multiple hobbies?). Rather than stopping I sought out a singing coach, who informed me I could sing, just I was consistently a semi-tone or two high and singing harmonies, I’m now far better, have a much expanded range but still go semitone or two high when I get too into the music - but its getting better.

In February I liked a posting by Musicality on social media and they invited me to join if I would like. Previously I had been invited to join a MVC but just didn’t think ‘choir’ was for me. Six weeks later I decided, ‘why not?’ contacted Simon and joined Musicality mid March ‘26 and instantly felt at home. They were such a welcoming and lovely bunch, the teamwork from simon to make sure the choir runs smoothly, and Ash who directs music, with love, not ego - just make it a comfortable and safe place to be. I now sing with the tenors, though have joined the basses when needed

I have cPTSD (ACE) and the demons in my head are rarely quiet, but they do shut-up when I am singing. Musicality are now one of my safe spaces - the wonderful diversity of my fellow choristers, the beauty of the singing - particularly the ladies - the shared focus - the good humour and the supportive environment Ash and Simon engender. I have even stopped asking Ash if my singing is OK, we’ve agreed that he’ll tell me if its not. If I miss a rehearsal, I feel I’ve missed out on nourishment and a couple of hours of a quiet mind

Having joined March ’26 it was a challenge to be ready for the Spring concert in May, but with the support of all I made it, made extra special because three of the songs we did have emotional meaning to members of my family, who were there. I was still buzzing for several hours after we’d finished

Fronting up a blues/rock band is great fun and plays to my ego, and I never thought that being a small cog in a bigger machine would be something I’d not only enjoy but love. I’m fairly sure it is the family of Musicality creating a safe space that has facilitated that. I’m not the most socially confident person but the supportive atmosphere of the choir, shared interest, knowing that we are all making magic together really helps overcome that. We do have a monthly social get together, which I still find a big challenge, but I do not think I know a nicer bunch of people to face those challenges with

I’m really looking forward to the Autumn concerts and Christmas carols after that, singing with a group of people who make a wonderful sound is good, doing it in front of a packed out hall is better. We are doing two nights in October which puts extra pressure on, but what a thing to be working forwards too.

My name is Alex. I moved from my hometown of Newport to Port Talbot with my husband in 2022. We had absolutely no connections to the area whatsoever and we didn't know anyone here so it was a big change for us, and since moving here we have had two children (now age 4 & 18 months). I don't really do too much aside from be a Mum and work, and besides that I enjoy playing video games and doing crochet, I'm an 'indoorsy' sort of person.

At school, I was a typical 'theatre kid', and my obsession with musical theatre started with a trip to see Blood Brothers when I was doing my GCSEs, amplified by a trip to my first West End show when I reached 6th form, we saw Billy Elliot - years later I found out that the Billy I'd seen on stage during that show was Tom Holland. Back in those days, music was my top subject, I was in the school choir, and I was part of an amateur dramatics society outside of school. I did lots of shows as often as I could, such as Annie, Bugsy Malone, Rent and High School Musical to name just a few, as well as school concerts and open mic nights with my friends. Sadly it all fizzled out when I started a full time job after 6th form, but I've never left the showtunes off my playlists.

Since becoming a Mum, I don't really do anything other than be a Mum and work - I had no hobbies outside of my house. With no connections or friends here, I decided to look for something that I knew I used to enjoy, to get a bit of myself back and hopefully make some friends in the process.

Rehearsals give me a place to take a few hours away from reality and escape back to that feeling I used to get in my teens, when I was rehearsing for shows at school and my local theatre company. The vibe here at Musicality is lovely too, it's friendly and welcoming, and I don't feel anxious to be there and sing which was a worry of mine initially!

It helps me unwind and disconnect from being a busy, working mum for a few hours and it gives me a chance to be around different people and gives me a bit of freedom. The more rehearsals I attend the better I feel, and after going from being a graded vocalist during my GCSEs and A Levels, to not singing for so many years and losing the strength in my voice, I can feel myself improving each week which is really exciting.

I've been here with Musicality for about three months now.

I'm excited about the concerts because as silly as it sounds, I feel like it's a brave thing for me to do after not putting myself out there for so long. I'm proud of myself for giving it a try and it will be exciting to stand with the lovely, talented people from Musicality Choir.
