🐾 Calling all Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies & other uniformed groups! 🐾
We’re excited to announce that Reaseheath Mini Zoo is trialling something new! 🌿

This December, we’re exploring the possibility of opening our doors to local uniformed groups for a special zoo experience, combining animal learning, hands-on activities and time together as a group.
Depending on the interests and needs of each group, sessions could include:
🦋 A guided tour of the zoo
🕷️ Up-close invert handling
🔎 Animal and conservation activities
🏠 Use of one of our dedicated teaching spaces for your group

📅 Proposed dates:
• Saturday 5th December
• Sunday 6th December
• Saturday 12th December
• Sunday 13th December

This is currently a trial opportunity, and we’re looking to gauge interest from local groups before finalising the format and activities.

If you’re a Scout, Guide, Cub, Brownie, Ranger, Explorer or another uniformed group and think your members would love a session at the zoo, we’d love to hear from you! 🐾

📧 Interested? Email us at [email protected] to register your interest and find out more.

We’re really excited about the possibility of welcoming more local young people behind the scenes at Reaseheath Mini Zoo and helping them discover more about animals, conservation and the natural world. 🌍💚

🎉 WE’RE BIAZA ACCREDITED! 🎉
We’re incredibly proud to announce that Reaseheath Mini Zoo has officially achieved BIAZA Accredited status! 🦁🐒🦋

Accreditation by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) recognises our commitment to high standards across animal welfare, conservation, education and research. It means we’ve demonstrated that we meet the world-class standards set by BIAZA for zoos and aquariums across the UK and Ireland. 🌍

And while the accreditation is the exciting bit, there’s been a lot happening behind the scenes to get us here! The process involved expert screening, questionnaires and extensive evidence demonstrating the work that goes into caring for our animals, supporting conservation and educating the next generation. 💚

A huge thank you to our entire zoo team for their dedication, hard work and commitment to maintaining such high standards every single day. This achievement belongs to all of you, and we couldn’t be prouder of what our team has accomplished. 🥰👏

From caring for our animals and inspiring our visitors, to training the next generation of animal professionals and pioneering conservation projects such as Project DUNG, we’re incredibly proud of the work we do here at Reaseheath Mini Zoo.
And this is just the beginning… 🌱

Come and celebrate with us this summer! ☀️

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Please be aware that, due to the heat, the zoo will be closing at 15:00 today.

This is to ensure the welfare of both our animals and our dedicated keeping team who have been working around the clock to care for the animals in the hot weather.

We will be back open tomorrow from 10:00 with 4 keeper talks happening throughout the day.

Thank you for your understanding and apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Amphibian Appreciation Post! 🐸

One of our keepers, Russell, took this great pictures of one of our White’s tree frogs who call Reaseheath Mini Zoo their home!

We think they look particularly deep in thought. What do you think they are pondering? 🤔

🦋 What better way to kick off the summer holidays than by helping wildlife? 🦋

Join us this week and take part in the Big Butterfly Count!

Simply pick up a butterfly ID sheet from the kiosk, keep an eye out for butterflies as you explore the zoo, record your sightings, and hand your sheet back before you leave. We’ll then submit all of your records to Butterfly Conservation and iNaturalist, helping to support important UK conservation projects.

We’ve also installed brand-new native butterfly identification signs around the zoo, making it even easier to discover and identify some of the beautiful butterfly species that call the UK home. Who knows how many you’ll spot? 🦋🌼

📚🐾 Learning never stops for our zoo team!

Last week, two members of the Reaseheath Mini Zoo team headed to the UKACT Annual Conference at Askham Bryan College for a fantastic few days of learning, networking and sharing ideas with colleagues from across the UK.

🦜 Nicole, our Conservation Education Lead and Zoo Registrar, attended in her role as a UKACT Guidelines Officer, working alongside other professionals to share best practice and support colleges across the country.

🦉 Beth, one of our specialist zookeepers, spent the conference expanding her knowledge through a range of talks and workshops, bringing back plenty of inspiration and new ideas to help us continue improving the care of our animals and the experiences we provide for our visitors.

At Reaseheath Mini Zoo, we believe learning never stops. Our keepers regularly take part in Continued Professional Development (CPD) by visiting other zoos, colleges and conferences to keep our knowledge and husbandry practices up to date. It’s also a brilliant opportunity to showcase the fantastic work being carried out by both our staff and students.

Every new idea, new skill and new connection helps us provide the very best care for our animals—and we think that’s something worth celebrating! 💚🐾

💚 Happy National ZooKeeper Week to our incredible keeper team! 🦎🦉🐐

This week we’re celebrating the amazing people who care for the animals at Reaseheath Mini Zoo, 365 days a year.

Being a zookeeper is so much more than feeding animals. It’s early mornings, late finishes, cleaning habitats, preparing specialist diets, training animals, creating enrichment, monitoring health, maintaining enclosures, supporting conservation and education, and always putting animal welfare first.

Whether they’re one of our full-time keepers or part of our fantastic part-time team, every single member of our keeping staff plays a vital role. Without their passion, dedication and hard work, the zoo simply wouldn’t be able to open its gates each day.

Over the coming week we’ll be introducing some of our full-time keepers, sharing a little more about the animals they care for and what makes them love their job.

To every one of our keepers – thank you. Thank you for the care you give our animals, the knowledge you share with our visitors, and for everything you do behind the scenes that often goes unnoticed. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated team. 💚

If you’ve ever enjoyed visiting the zoo, learned something new from a keeper, or have a favourite animal, we’d love for you to leave our team a message in the comments below! 👇

Happy National ZooKeeper Week! 🦜🐾
