Bandspace carried out a snapshot survey to find how musicians use professional music rehearsal spaces. Its 2023 online survey estimated there were 398 commercial spaces in the UK offering a generalised overview of the UK’s music rehearsal sector.

The findings suggest many musicians paying to use a professional practice room are preparing to perform locally. While others use one to pursue their interest in making music not intending to perform in public. First time users find a music space through a personal recommendation. Income derived from professional music touring plays a small part. It is likely the independent network of music rehearsal spaces in the UK is dependent on musicians' personal incomes.

Business overheads was a major challenge for music rehearsal spaces. Maintaining equipment and the impact of cancelled bookings also took a significant toll on the cost of running a space. Rent associated with not owning the property was an issue too, followed by business rates and insurances. Most individual practice rooms are booked at least three times per week suggesting many are under-utilised.

Music rehearsal spaces play an important role in supporting the early careers of music artists. Bandspace thanks the 80 music rehearsal spaces who responded to the survey.
