Growing Histories Project

Growing Histories Project Growing Histories aims to record the oral histories of gardeners from a range of cultural backgrounds and to increase local involvement in community gardens.

Growing Histories is a heritage lottery funded project, based at Ashiana Community Project in Sparkbrook, Birmingham. The aim of this project is to document the diverse heritages of food cultivation and preparation which find expression in inner city Birmingham today. In recent decades there has been a resurgence of interest in food cultivation at home, in allotments and in community gardens, whic

h has largely been driven by increased cultural diversity. The project will draw on oral history interviews with gardeners from a range of cultural backgrounds, charting their growing histories and the significance of food cultivation for them and for their communities. Local people will also have the opportunity to learn and to contribute their knowledge to the project through participation in group activities in allotments and community gardens in their neighbourhoods.
