Four studies in shadow.

A small selection of my recent charcoal figure studies — exploring femininity, light and shadow, and the quiet emotion found in a moment of stillness.

I’m drawn to faces that don’t reveal everything. The areas left in darkness can sometimes say as much as the features themselves.

Charcoal, light and instinct — working directly onto paper.

Which one speaks to you most? 1, 2, 3 or 4? 🖤

From the first marks to the finished portrait. 🖤

Charcoal, pastel, gouache, gesso and Conté — built up, erased and layered until the light began to emerge.

I love seeing how much a piece can change from those very first marks.

Building the darks, pulling back the light and letting the face slowly appear.

Oil on Canvas Portrait | 70cm x 100cm
Figurative Art | Contemporary Fine Art

There’s something powerful about capturing emotion through light and shadow. This new oil on canvas portrait explores quiet strength, femininity, and presence — a balance I’m always drawn to in my figurative work.

I love working with blurred edges, soft transitions and minimal detail, allowing the viewer to feel the atmosphere before noticing the features. This painting is part of my ongoing exploration of intimate, expressive portraiture.
