LandxSea is Scotland's first environmental film festival. Based in the picturesque coa

stal town of Montrose, we present an inspiring weekend of new environmental films, guests, discussions, and special events. Our focus is the deep connection between land & sea, showcasing environmental films from diverse global perspectives. The festival is hosted at the Montrose Playhouse, a community-owned, state-of-the-art multi-screen cinema & arts venue that opened in 2021.

1st Annual Festival in September 2023: Over three days, we spotlighted 22 new environmental films from around the world, with 12 visiting filmmakers and guest speakers, expert panels, and incredible audience discussions. We're still buzzing from a weekend of packed houses, compelling films that sparked deep emotions, and the buzz of conversation echoing long after the credits rolled. We're already counting down to our next adventure together!

Deep in France’s Vosges forests, celebrated photographer Vincent Munier journeys with his naturalist father and 12-year-old son in search of lynx, deer, owls and the elusive capercaillie.

More than a nature film, this is a hushed family portrait: a meditation on patience, inheritance and learning to listen.

"Care and con­cern for the Earth is expressed through poetry, music, and other forms of cre­at­ive expres­sions."

Scottish Filmmaker Glenda Rome's film Expressing The Earth will screen at LandxSea Festival on Saturday, 12 September, at 2:55 pm

Great to see this in-depth piece in the The Herald exploring how the film came to be, from a chance encounter in Iona with the work of Spirituality scholar James Newell, which led to Glenda discovering geopoetics and Edin­burgh-born geo­lo­gist James Hut­ton who spearheaded the geo­po­et­ics move­ment.

“I was blown away,” she said. “I felt this guy has got the lan­guage for the kind of peace you find in the moun­tains.” So she decided to make a film. “Everything just aligned,” the vet­eran film­maker said. “I met Nor­man Bis­sell, who runs the Scot­tish Centre For Geo­po­et­ics on the island of Luing. That was the begin­ning of the three-year jour­ney of mak­ing the film.”

Over the past few years, LandxSea has partnered with Angus Climate Hub on a number of creative climate initiatives. These include the Coastal Erosion Summit at our 2024 festival; the Springboard Local Assembly for Creative Climate Action in 2025, featuring Montrose-embedded Sea Change artist Eve Mosher; and, most recently, our LandxSea Monthly screening of the People's Emergency Briefing, followed by a community discussion exploring the climate and environmental security issues raised by the film.

“A brilliant, inspiring hopeful film that shows how powerful committed citizens can be.” George Monbiot - journalist, author, environmental activist, Guardian columnist.

JO IN THE WATER follows passionate sea swimmer turned reluctant activist Jo Bateman as she takes on one of the UK’s biggest water companies in a David-and-Goliath battle to protect our waters from devastating sewage pollution.

With Surfers Against Sewage's most recent water quality report highlighting that 4.7 million hours of sewage was dumped into UK waters in 2024, and 23,498 sewage dumps pouring into Scottish waters for over 208,377 hours specifically - there has never been a more urgent time to highlight and address the issues around our water safety than now!

We're delighted that Jo will be joining us in person following the screening alongside director Pip Piper for a Q&A session.

A FILM NOT TO BE MISSED!

"Dun­dee-born Derek Gow, who grew up in the Bor­ders, is Bri­tain’s fore­most rewilder and argu­ably its most out­spoken farm­ing voice after Jeremy Clark­son. And Gow has a simple explan­a­tion: cen­tur­ies of sheep graz­ing have stripped his home coun­try’s hills of the scrub, trees and wet­lands that once held mois­ture in the ground, leav­ing tinder-dry moor­land behind".

Synopsis:

In rural Devon, two neighbouring farmers, both called Derek, have become unlikely representatives of a much bigger argument about land, food, nature and change. Derek Banbury runs an intensive dairy farm and sees no reason to stop. Derek Gow has taken a radically different path, transforming his fields into a haven for beavers, wild boar and native species.

What begins as a local feud soon opens out into something richer and more revealing: a portrait of a countryside under pressure, where tradition, livelihoods, biodiversity and belonging are all up for debate.

This is environmental storytelling at its most human: messy, affectionate, argumentative and full of life.

In the Bolivian Andes, the global race for lithium tells an old story in new language: colonialism, extraction, resistance and the question of who really pays for the green transition.

MATERIA PRIMA by Jens Schanze screens at LandxSea on 12 September, 12.15pm - Followed by a live Q&A with impact producers Marcela Lizcano and Tatiana Vila (South America), and Ben Kempas and Hannah Papacek Harper (Europe).

Hold Fast! Our shorts programme this year features six films from Scotland and around the world that explore what we hold fast to, what we risk losing and how we adapt when familiar worlds shift. 🌏

Across threatened landscapes and changing communities, these inventive shorts focus on individuals trying to make sense of the immense changes affecting their traditional land and sea-faring communities - from the banks of the southern Iraqi marshlands to a fishing community in Buckhaven, Fife. 🎣🏝️

Relive Watership Down on the big screen: 13 September, 11.30am

We're bringing an absolutely classic back to the big screen! Watership Down is one of those films that almost any UK child of the 80s will remember (possibly for sleepless nights that followed?)

Watership Down, based on Richard Adams' beloved novel about a group of rabbits fleeing the destruction of their warren, was released in 1978, each frame beautifully hand-drawn and voiced by a stellar cast of actors.

To this day, it remains one of the most devastating environmental films ever made: a story about habitat loss, displacement and the fragility of belonging, sharing a message as powerful today as when it was made.

We're screening it remastered in stunning 4K, the way it deserves to be seen. Relive the nostalgia, bring along the family, pack the tissues!
