Monmouth Choral Society

Monmouth Choral Society Welcome to Monmouth Choral Society! Our friendly choir has been making music for 150 years. Monmouth Choral Society is a welcoming and friendly choir.

We aim to bring local choral singers together with professional soloists, accompanists and orchestras, to learn and perform great choral music. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings 7.30-9.30 p.m. at Bridges Community Centre, Monmouth. We work hard, have fun and are committed to learning and performing a wide and ambitious programme of choral music. We have an outstanding professional conductor, Steven

Kings, who charms and cajoles us into high levels of achievement. Each year we perform at least two major concerts with professional orchestra and soloists as well as a popular candlelit Christmas concert in St Mary’s Priory Church and a Summer concert. We hold choral workshops and master classes with renowned choral trainers such as David Hill, Director of the BBC Singers and The Bach Choir. We also have social activities and recently have sung in St David’s, Hereford and Gloucester Cathedrals over the summer break.

Monmouth Choral Society members know exactly how great choral singing is for us. We feel it every week - the endorphins; the ‘big sigh’ of releasing stress; the sense of community and friendship... and the sense of achievement that comes with performing great choral music alongside the phenomenal talents of professional musicians.

Don’t take our word for it - come and join us this September 1 and immerse yourself in a season of sensational singing!

MCS welcomes singers in all voice parts. No auditions; drop in to rehearsal or contact us to join in the joy! find out more on our website or email [email protected]

Such a historic moment, brought about by months and years of hard work from people who refuse to stop standing for the rights of our beautiful river. We feel very honoured to be singing Eloise Gynn's piece 'Wye' at our summer concert, and especially to welcome the river herself, in her glass bottle (you can see it in the video at 0.14), to be present as we sing. There'll also be a chance to grab your copy of the River Charter in the interval - all while enjoying an evening of glorious, moving music!

Did you know that long before conservatories studied it, the African American spiritual was quietly reshaping choral music as we know it — its call-and-response structures, raw emotional power, and communal voice changing everything that followed.

This June, Monmouth Choral Society celebrates that legacy, singing music from Florence Price, Undine Smith Moore and Samuel Coleridge Taylor, and following the influence right through to John Rutter's arrangements of key spirituals in 'Feel the Spirit'.

Join us for a moving and uplifting evening of stories told through song, as we honour the far-reaching influence of this influential music - music that speaks of freedom, hope, and justice.

✨ Introducing our guest soloist for 'Songs of the Spirit' - 6 June, St Mary's Priory Monmouth 🎶

We are delighted to be singing alongside our guest soloist for our upcoming concert, Songs of the Spirit — the wonderfully talented mezzo-soprano Rebecca Chellappah.

Rebecca holds a Masters in Music with Distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). Her operatic title roles include Bizet's Carmen (which won the National Opera and Dramatic Association UK Best Operatic Production 2018), Delilah in Saint-Saëns'
Samson and Delilah, and Hélène in Offenbach's La Belle Hélène.

Rebecca is an active recital singer and runs a successful private singing studio. She firmly believes — and we wholeheartedly agree — that singing is simply good for the soul.

If you'd like a sneak preview of Rebecca's beautiful voice, she is performing with Thornbury Choral Society on 16 May, also conducted by Steve Kings. A wonderful opportunity to hear her ahead of our Summer Concert!
