When you are in a band and you love music you want to be able to record your music. The Rockfield Studios that we know today started with Charles and Kingsley being in bands. As well as recording their own music they had a big impact on the local music scene - headlining gigs and supporting some of the well known artists of the day including Gene Vincent in the summer of 1961! (Though sadly we don’t have the poster for that one! )

It’s Record Store Day today…. the sun is shining, it’s a glorious morning so head out to your local record shop and find some vinyl treasures. Monmouth has always been blessed having had fantastic record shops over the years, from Marsh’s in the 60s and Round Ear as the place to be in the 80s (both with family connections to us at Rockfield coincidentally) we now have in The White Swan Court. Get out and support your local record shop if you can….there’s quite the queue already outside Grinning Soul Records

We are all so sorry to hear about Moya Brennan. Such an incredible talent and human being. We were lucky enough to have Clannad here in 1987 when they recorded their album Sirius. Great memories....

Soooo….Up until now we have neglected to mention that this year we are celebrating 65 years of recording at Rockfield Studios. Yes, we are halfway through our seventh decade! 🥳

Needless to say we have been going down memory lane and this prompted a trip right up to the top of the house. Charles and Kingsley’s mum, Joan, told them that they could play and record up there in the attic. The band played in one room and the recording equipment was set up next door.

On the hunt for something to help with the acoustics they came up with the idea of lining the walls with the bags from the pig feed and some of those bags are still on the wall to this day. (Pictured below ) …. Also there is mystery of just how that huge Phillips tape machine got up those stairs into the attic but somehow it was managed !
