Had a bit of a day yesterday on a Somerset Art Weeks trail and found some highly recommendable studios- love being able to visit these studios which we wouldn't know existed if it wasn't for these weeks. Firstly and very difficult to find without the directions in the brochure is June Dobson's ceramics (051 in the brochure) outside Buckland St Mary- excellent and Christine Buckler (ceramics) and Sally Kent (glass) (013) in Horton whose glass and ceramics also impressed. Have a great time discovering the talent in Somerset.

Does anyone else remember the Ricky Tick club in Windsor in the old mansion (it was where I was first introduced to Ska & Bluebeat, Tamla and great live acts)? Colin Mansfield, founder member of Louis & the Iguanas and former drummer therewith, has decided to finish off his brother John's book on the club. It was John who ran the club and all the other off shoots. Any memorabilia, photographs, stories & tales will be gratefully received.

Dear All.
Milverton Arts Association will be breaking new ground when it puts on a talk on the wonderful textiles of the hill tribes of southern China entitled Writing with Thread – the textile language & traditions of the Minorities of southwest China. Martin Conlan has travelled for many years through the remoter tribal communities in the area. He has developed a passion for the remarkable textiles that are made and used by the many different groups living there. For most of these minorities their cultural survival is intrinsically bound up with their remarkable textiles as they are nearest thing they have to a written language. Where written languages are absent the language of the textiles is paramount: what one wears on significant occasions identifies where you are from, your social status, and relates aspects of the historical journey of your ancestors. When worn during ceremonial occasions these textiles become important cultural transmitters for the young and reinforce the stories for the adults of the group. In some communities these traditions have a lineage of thousands of years.
Textiles have been incorporated into all key moments in their daily lives, offering protection during sickness, for good harvests, and are important for all births, deaths & marriage ceremonies.
Martin is a leading authority on Chinese Minority textiles from southwest China and will be displaying examples of the textiles along with a powerpoint presentation.

Advance reservations at £5.00 may be made to [email protected] or by phoning 01823 400470 or tickets on the door will be £7.50. It is going to be held on Wednesday 23rd March at The Victoria Rooms in Milverton. Doors open 7.30pm. There will be a licensed bar.

Best Wishes
Russell

We are promoting this event with Martin Conlan and his wonderful collection of rare and beautiful textiles and costume. A rare chance to get close to these wonderful things and learn about the tribal context from a man who has travelled in the area for 30 odd years, even before you were allowed to, leading to him being thrown out!

The new cover photo is another of Martin's illustrations of costume of the Miao (Hmong) people of South East China that will be featured in his talk. Wax resist, applique and embroidery are all used to decorate the fabric.
