On the 13th of November, Community Artist and Founder of WE ARE THE IROKO C.I.C, Chinwe Osaghae had the privilege of presenting on a topic close to her heart — the importance of passing on our cultural heritage to future generations.

In a world that’s constantly evolving, our traditions, stories, languages, and values remind us of who we are and where we come from. They connect us to our roots and give future generations a strong sense of identity and belonging.

One of her key takeaways: preserving culture isn’t about resisting change — it’s about carrying forward the wisdom, pride, and lessons of the past while growing into the future.
From elders who hold our history to young people who will shape tomorrow, every generation has a role in keeping our heritage alive.

Let’s honour what came before us, celebrate what we have today, and protect what we want to pass on.

✨ *Culture lives because we choose to keep it alive.*

*Reimagining Heritage: Crafting Interactive Stories with Adinkra Symbols and Museum Artefacts*

Last October, for the Black History Month programme at the MK Museum, Community Artist & CEO Chinwe Osaghae, had the pleasure of hosting an inspiring workshop that brought together art, heritage, and storytelling in a truly dynamic way.

Drawing on the rich visual language of Adinkra symbols and artefacts from the MK museum, participants explored how these cultural treasures can be woven into interactive stories that illuminate the powerful journeys and resilience of Black people through the ages.

The session invited participants to reflect on the meanings behind traditional Adinkra symbols—each carrying centuries of wisdom, philosophy, and identity—and to reinterpret them as storytelling tools. Paired with historical artefacts, these symbols became creative gateways into narratives of migration, innovation, struggle, and triumph.

Through hands-on activities and collaborative storytelling exercises, we explored how digital and physical storytelling methods can breathe new life into museum collections—transforming static exhibits into living stories that connect past and present. The workshop celebrated how heritage can inspire not just remembrance, but reimagination.

The result was an energizing exchange of ideas, art, and emotion—a reminder that Black history is not confined to the past, but continues to shape and inspire the future of creative expression.

Theme: Reclaiming Our Roots

Welcome to our Black History Month Sustainable Fashion Show gallery — where we’re reclaiming our roots one outfit at a time!

We celebrated the creativity, resilience, and innovation of Black designers and communities who’ve always known how to make something out of nothing — and make it look fabulous!

Segment 1 — Heritage Meets Sustainability

Long before it had a hashtag, our ancestors were practising sustainability every day: reusing, repairing, and reimagining what they had.

These looks remind us that heritage and environmental consciousness can walk hand-in-hand.

Segment 2 — The Power of Expression

“Fashion has always been a form of storytelling — and tonight, every piece tells one. You can feel the power of self-expression in the colours, the textures, and the confidence.

Each outfit says: I know who I am. I know where I come from. And I know where I’m headed. That’s what reclaiming our roots is all about.”

Segment 3 — Innovation & the Future

We’re stepping into the future — a future where fashion doesn’t cost the earth. These designs prove that sustainable fashion can be bold, edgy, and forward-thinking.

It’s not just about fabric - it’s about values. It’s about using creativity to change the world, one outfit at a time.”

Segment 4 — Community and Connection

Community is at the heart of both fashion and sustainability. When we support local designers, when we buy secondhand, when we upcycle — we’re not just saving clothes, we’re saving culture.

"Reclaiming our roots isn’t just about looking back. It’s about moving forward with purpose, pride, and sustainability in every step.

May we continue to honour our ancestors by protecting the earth they walked on and by expressing our Black excellence — consciously, creatively, and unapologetically.

Thank you all for being part of this journey. Stay inspired, stay sustainable, and keep reclaiming your roots!"

What a powerful gathering we experienced at our recent Ayo Game Workshop—a space where strategy met storytelling, and play became a portal into heritage.

Ayo, more than just a game, is a living thread in the fabric of African culture—one that invites purposeful engagement, sharpens minds, and brings generations together across time and space.

As seeds moved across carved boards, so too did laughter, wisdom, and connection.

🖤 Thank you to everyone who joined in, contributed, and carried the spirit of community forward. Together, we celebrated tradition, strategy, and togetherness in one enriching experience.

Let’s keep the game alive. Let’s keep the heritage moving.

🌿 Eco Living Exhibition Opens to Inspire a Greener Future

A bold celebration of sustainability, culture, and innovation unfolded as the highly anticipated Eco Living Exhibition officially was opened by the Mayor, Clr James Lancaster.

Designed to inspire eco-conscious living rooted in sustainswŵ tradition and modern solutions, the exhibition drew a vibrant crowd of changemakers, creatives, and community members.

From zero-waste innovations and sustainable fashion to green building techniques and traditional wisdom, the event offered an immersive look into what living in harmony with nature truly means.

A standout installation — a colourful rug woven from 25,000 strips of scrap fabric — captured 6the spirit of the exhibition. Each thread symbolised ancestral knowledge, circular living, and the creative power of waste transformed.

The launch featured interactive workshops, live demos, and powerful conversations led by local eco-leaders and artisans. The event also marked the beginning of a month-long program of tours, school visits, and community activities focused on climate action and green living.

“This isn’t just an exhibition — it’s a movement,” said [Chinwe Osaghae], at WE ARE THE IROKO C.I.C. “We’re reclaiming old wisdom to build new solutions.”

The Eco Living Exhibition runs until the 25th October at The Cornerstine MK and is open to the public.
