I'm back! My Easter holiday trip to Brazil with my family was divineeeee I almost didn't come back, haha
But here I am, and today one of my lovely 1-1 tutees and I made some great progress on these waxwings in pastel 🐦

Today was the first session of my new Oil Pastels and Still Life short course! We discussed composition, colour theory, surface choices, oil pastels and how they work differently, and how to produce beautiful, painterly results using them.
A strong start, we did all of that and also got our sketches finished, so next week is all about colour!

1-1 sessions are always so fun. Today, my tutee and I started laying the foundations for an oil painting still life. We spoke about colour theory and complimentary colours, underpainting, and how to get lighting right.

An incredible wrap to this block of the Essence of Art weekly classes. We've spent the last 6 weeks working with oil pastels, a medium that is the MOST "trust the process" medium I've ever worked with. The results, though 😍😍 working off impressionist and post-impressionist artworks from the 's works in the public domain archive, we each now have our own Monet, Cezanne, Hassam, and Van Gogh studies for our walls at home! I've avoided oil pastels for the last 15 years of my life because I struggled to make them work for me, but I'm officially converted. Would you sign up for an oil pastel short course?

Cautiously optimistic that my son and I have recovered from all bugs and complications that we started 2025 off with. I'm back in the studio more regular hours! The Essence of Art weekly group has been absolutely rocking oil pastels these last few sessions. It's a tricky medium that requires a lot of faith in the process 😂 using pictures from the 's archive of work in the public domain, we've been making our own impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces, discussing the use of colour and contrast, but mostly having fun colouring in like kids again 🧑‍🎨

I haven't posted on here in an age, but we've been very busy with classes and private tutoring behind the scenes! We're wrapping up our Essence of Art group classes block in the next two weeks, and we've really been pushing our skills with the introduction of lino cutting and block prints. It's been a fun journey of collaborative problem solving and celebration 😄 we'll be using these blocks to print our own Christmas cards and gift tags 🎁🎄
