Closing Party x Industrial Coast

We’re closing out Middlesbrough Art Week 2026 with a banger. The Auxiliary Project Space and Industrial Coast are teaming up for a night of heavy electronic music, with internationally acclaimed producer Headless Horseman headlining the evening. Headless Horseman brings an uncompromising blend of industrial techno and atmospheric sound that has earned him a reputation as one of the most distinctive artists in underground electronic music.

Alongside the headline performance, audiences can experience a specially commissioned immersive installation by Daisy Dickinson, created in collaboration with Japanese artists E-Da Kazuhisa, Akihide Monna and Koichi Yamanoha. The work will transform the gallery space into an evolving audio-visual environment of light and sound.

presents Digger Dance by Liberty Hodes

🪏 Digger Dance is a performance which borrows the trope of a pantomime horse to re-enact scenes of demolition through a two-person dance of large yellow cardboard Excavator. Part of a wider performance series called Demolition Bodies; this work uses heritage performance and folk culture as a lens to make sense of the spectacle of watching familiar spaces become sites of controlled destruction. The choreography was devised in collaboration with performance maker Zoe Kendall.

Alongside the Verisimilitude exhibition are a series of talks taking place this Saturday and Sunday. You can find all of the details for each talk on our Eventbrite page.

*Verisimilitude: the appearance of being true or real *

This exhibition brings together four artists at different career stages to ask how authenticity itself is made.

Supported by the Henry Moore Foundation, Turner on Tees and Middlesbrough Art Week, featuring work by Luke Beech, Garth Gratrix, Kitty McKay and Liz Wilson.

Verisimilitude also presents a print exhibition featuring the selected sculptors alongside 6 additional artists. The exhibition is coordinated with Hardcopy, a publisher of artists’ editions and multiples based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Ai Marketing Solutions - for all your bullsh*tting needs!

An opportunity to have an audience with the president of the United States of America. A right wing marketing device designed to reach people who are either too poor or too stupid to already be reached via the internet. Initially made for the Artbomb festival in Doncaster 2025, it uses a cheap Ai Donald Trump app; an old CRT television and a wheelbarrow. Devised from an earlier work called ‘Self propelled Self promotion machine’ and a more recent piece called ‘This is NOT Donald Trump’ the work plays on notions of what is real.

What would Turner make of Middlesbrough?

Join artist Simon Poulter as he explores the town through the eyes of J.M.W. Turner, bringing together colour, light, atmosphere and a crowd-sourced watercolour made with suggestions from people across Boro.

Alongside the artwork, Simon will delve into Turner’s pigments, colour chemistry and the radical techniques that helped pave the way for modern abstract art.

Those who are familiar with MAW know that we bring life to meanwhile spaces. For this year’s festival, we’ve taken over 15 Queen’s Square, a stunning Grade II listed building. Built in 1850 and once home to the founding fathers of Middlesbrough. You’ll find the exhibition Lineage: Painting from the Tees Valley housed in this beautiful building, alongside Lineage are three other works from artists Charlie Murphy, Erin Dickson and Kate Stobbart.

💧 Erin Dickson - Pi**ed
Inspired by Rembrandt’s Pi***ng Woman (1631), one of the first of its kind to depict female urination as an everyday act without ecclesiastical ceremony, PI**ED is a means to transgress puritanical and prejudiced social, political, and religious codes of what it means to be indecent, particularly when it comes to gendered stereotypes.

💋 Charlie Murphy - K. Kiss (1999 – 2010)
This intense video portrait draws on over 100 hours of documentation recorded during Charlie Murphy’s infamous participatory ‘kiss-in’ events which toured galleries, museums and arts festivals across the UK and internationally between 1999 and 2009.

🤌 Kate Stobbart - Hand Gesture Film
In Hand Gesture Film, Stobbart isolates the gestures that accompany everyday conversation. Drawn from filmed exchanges of people talking one-to-one and reconstructed through a score-like process, the work presents a sequence of different people’s hand gestures, moving through a silent vocabulary of communication.
