Borderlands Creative People & Places is seeking a Project Assistant to support the delivery of Little Boro, a Creative Container Village located on Centre Square outside MIMA during Middlesbrough Art Week from Thursday 24 September– Saturday 3 October 2026.

Little Boro is a collaboration between Middlesborough Art Week, Middlesborough Cultural Partnership and Borderlands, creating a welcoming gateway to the town’s wider cultural offer. Across ten containers, the village will host a programme of exhibitions and workshops, involving professional artists, community members and creative organisations from Middlesbrough.

This role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience of delivering a public-facing cultural programme at a significant moment for Middlesbrough. Working alongside producers, artists, site staff and partner organisations, the successful candidate will support the day-to-day running of the village and help create a welcoming, accessible and engaging experience for visitors, artists and participants.

Are you looking at a future Turner Prize winner?

With the Turner Prize arriving in Middlesbrough this September, the town is about to become a major focus for contemporary art. Bringing together established, internationally recognised and emerging artists - Middlesbrough Art Week creates opportunities to discover new work, new voices and artists at different stages of their careers.

We’re taking a closer look at Izzie Beirne, Alia Gargum, Liz Wilson and Errol Theunissen. Come and take a look the artists shaping the conversation now and some of the names we’ll be talking about for years to come.

As Middlesbrough prepares to welcome the Turner Prize this autumn, artist Simon Poulter is asking local people a simple question:

If J.M.W. Turner visited Middlesbrough today, where would he set up his easel?

Presented as part of Middlesbrough Art Week 2026, Turner in Middlesbrough sees Simon Poulter create a large-scale watercolour inspired by locations suggested by the people of Middlesbrough.

The finished painting will be unveiled during Middlesbrough Art Week on Saturday 3 October, displayed in a specially designed mobile case that allows visitors to experience the work up close.

Alongside the installation, Simon Poulter will deliver a fascinating illustrated talk exploring Turner’s remarkable use of colour and watercolour. Audiences will discover the pigments Turner worked with, how newly invented colours transformed nineteenth-century painting, and why his late watercolours continue to influence artists today.

Whether your favourite view is the Transporter Bridge, Roseberry Topping, the Tees Estuary, Eston Hills, or a street known only to locals, Turner in Middlesbrough is an invitation to think differently about the town and the landscapes we value. Middlesbrough Art Week 2026 - September 24th to October 3rd.

MAW returns for its 9th edition with a programme deeply rooted in Middlesbrough's cultural landscape. The festival presents ten days of exhibitions, installations, performances, screenings, talks and public events across the town and, for the first time, in The Auxiliary’s exhibition space, bringing together internationally renowned artists alongside some of the most exciting emerging voices working today.

Taking place under the title An Island of Neighbours, the festival explores what it means to be open, connected and actively involved in the cultural life of our places. MAW26 invites people to meet artists, make work, share ideas and discover the remarkable creative communities that exist across Teesside.

Artists exhibiting across MAW26 include Jeremy Deller, Larry Achiampong, Sky Hopinka, Morag Myerscough, Andy Holden and Catherine Bertola.

Spend two days with us exploring public art and how it shapes place.

FORGED: Public Art in the Tees Valley takes place 15-16 May, bringing together artists, fabricators and commissioners to explore how public art is made and experienced.

Friday 15 May includes the launch of the FORGED Public Art Action Plan, a practical resource developed over three years of working across the Tees Valley, and the unveiling of a new sculpture by Alia Gargum, ‘What I Remember about Libya’, commissioned with support from the Henry Moore Foundation. Lunch provided. 12pm-6pm.

Saturday 16 May is a drop-in day with creative activities, a chance to meet commissioners, and open conversations around public art and place. 10.30am-2.30pm.

❗❗There are only 3 days left to submit to the North East Open Call ❗❗

From the initial open call, 15 artists will be invited to apply with a more detailed proposal. Each artist will be offered a fee of £75 to cover some of the costs involved. From the 15 submissions 5 will be chosen for exhibition at Middlesbrough Art Week 2026.

💚 Second round selectors are: Penny Payne, Garth Gartrix, Olivia Mason, David Hoyland and Harriet Sutcliffe.

Penny is an artist & the curator of North East Open Call, working on the North East coast. Through sculpture and installation, her practice considers and brings attention to overlooked women’s histories.

Garth is a contemporary artist based in the North of England whose practice explores queerness, space and materials, using self-imposed rules within a not-so-straight-line where the formal and frolicsome meet.

Olivia is a seasoned development leader with over a decade of experience widening public access to art and culture. She has led stakeholder engagement, philanthropy, income generation, and programme delivery across major UK institutions, including a senior development role at Tate.

David is the founder of Seventeen, a contemporary art gallery with a focus on moving image. Founded by David in 2005, Seventeen exhibits works by emerging artists, with a particular focus on moving image.

Harriet is the Director of Newcastle Contemporary Art and an artist, curator, and researcher. She is also an Associate Lecturer at Newcastle University, where she completed her PhD in 2021 on radical art school pedagogy and the Basic Course at King’s College.

🖍️ There is no fixed theme, this open call invites artists to submit work that reflects their current practice. We are not looking for responses to a brief or concept. We are interested in what artists are already making. All media and disciplines are welcome.

👉🏼 We welcome applications featuring existing work from artists and creatives who are from/based in the North East. Selected artists will present work as part of a group exhibition at Middlesbrough Art Week.
