I cannot BELIEVE it has already been a YEAR since I went out on my own and opened up Obsidian Hive Tattoo. And it has honestly been one of the best decisions I have made for my career so far. I have been so blessed to meet so many new and wonderful people, and to be able to run my studio the way I feel it should be.

From those who have been in to get a tattoo, to those who quietly engage with my content, this is my little way of trying to give back! I have so much more in store for this second year of tattooing so stay tuned, and I can’t wait to see what another year of tattooing brings!

1st place: A custom tattoo valued at £250
2nd Place: A free, pre-drawn design from my flash - if this is a collaborative work, payment for the original artist will still be required on the day.
3rd Place: A £50 tattoo voucher redeemable for any tattoo value.

My good God when did August end? So much has happened this year so far, and yet the summer has FLOWN by!
I started with month with my Dad and Grandma coming to visit. I got them on some fake skin to give them an idea of what I do! They were amazed by the concnetration required, and they were only at it for an hour xD It was so nice to show my Grandma a bit of my life for the last 5 years for the first time. Keeping up that cybersigilism roll! This client said he found me by googling “cybersigilism Middlesbrough” and I was the first result!
Sam came to me unsure on what exactly he wanted, just set on style. So I told him to send me some pictures of pieces he liked, be that the content or the composition. From that we picked out some reoccurring elements; angels, crosses, and text. With a little more brainstorming, we decided on a depiction of the archangel Michael, with a cross and the verse where he defeats Satan.
I adored doing this piece and Sam was very open to my ideas and for me to try some new techniques. The concept was to make it look sketched in a way, to create textured linework that I thought fit in well with the cybersigilism style. Cannot wait to see how it heals up!

Baptism of Fire - Chapter 2: The First Tattoo
Okay, now we get onto the tattoos part! This was the moment I realised what I wanted to do with my art. I always knew I wanted to use my art for something in my future, I thought I had figured it out with comics. I had no idea this would be my direction when I first moved to Middlesbough but I’m sure glad it worked out that way! And I can bring the comics with me. Tattooing has been a source of a lot of joy in my life, even if there have been some tough moments, I wouldn’t still be here if I didn’t love what I do. You’ll see what that means soon enough, follow to stay tuned for the next chapter!

Last Time:
Narration: By the time a year had passed since losing Charlie, I was living in Middlesbrough for uni. // And so, my mum and I decided to get a tattoo.

Nicole: I knew very little about tattooing at the time, I just picked a studio that seemed successful and clean. Ink Master was about the extent of my research.

Narration: I didn’t hunt for a style or artist, it was the DATE that mattered to me, the one year anniversary. I booked well over a month in advance to secure it.

Narration: It was important to me that the artist knew our story, so once I was booked in, I told the artist and poured my heart out.

Nicole: Four days before the appointment, I asked if they’d started the design and if I could see it. // I know now that’s not the norm, but they said they’d send it to me the next day. // I was so, so excited.

Narration: I heard nothing until the day before the appointment
Phone: Your artist has CANCELLED your session.

Narration: I went over in a panic, my mum was already making the 5 hour drive from my hometown.
Nicole: Is anyone else available?

Narration: The next day we went into the studio. He used the sketch of some silhouettes I had drawn as reference, and so I spent the session explaining all the little details that made them unique.// I saw the original artist in that day tattooing someone else, I still have no idea why they cancelled the appointment.

This is one from a while back! (Haha, back) This delicate spinal piece was lovely to do, I think the lil fishies are so cute! My client’s original reference had lilies and cherry blossoms, so listening to my recommendation, we went with a more thematic version of water lilies that brought the piece together. Designing tattoos is a lot like creating a scene! I would be game for more like this, drop me a message to ask about yours.

Baptism of Fire - Chapter 1: Two Cats

Jokes aside, this was a tough one to write, but important to cover, because without my favourite boys, I wouldn’t be a tattoo artist today! Aside from he content, this was quite fun to draw, so looking forward to doing the next chapter. Drop me a follow if you’re interested in seeing what happens next!

TRANSCRIPT

Nicole: I never actually thought of tattooing growing up. // I didn’t want any either because of cosplaying!

Narration: Bit there were two little critters that would change my mind about that: Charlie and Mingau. They meant the world to me. 2012

Narration: Our first loss came 7 years later. We lost Mingau to cancer. // He purred right up until the end.

Narration: Later that year we moved onto a canal boat. Fortunately, Charlie thrived in marina life.

Nicole: Then COVID hit and I moved out during lockdown. // I managed to escape it without losing anyone… almost. // On December 23rd, I got a call.

Narration: My mum had found him limp on the front deck. // We suspected a stroke or a heart attack but were never sure.

Nicole: It was a difficult Christmas, but looking back, it could have been much worse. // I’m glad that at least he was at home and he didn’t just disappear. // But enough of the sad stuff!

Narration: By the time a year had passed since losing Charlie, I was living in Middlesbough for uni. // And so, my mum and I decided to get a tattoo… // To be continued…
