Student artist Jaime Johnson shares the story that inspired their latest artwork.
Their painting draws from Book 9 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, where Iphis—a young Cretan girl raised as a boy to escape her father’s threat—falls in love with another girl, Ianthe. Caught between identity, desire and fear, Iphis’s world is transformed when her mother prays to the goddess Isis, who changes Iphis into a man so the two can marry.

Jaime’s work reflects on this ancient tale of gender, transformation and love, reimagining how myth can speak to the complexities of identity today.

Celebration of Welsh Contemporary Painting 2026 continues with the second exhibition in this year’s series, officially opened at by the Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil.

We are delighted to congratulate the six painters selected from last year’s Cyfarthfa: Juxtaposed Art Prize, each invited to present their distinct artistic practice within this evolving platform for contemporary Welsh painting. Their work is joined by shortlisted students from , offering an invaluable moment for emerging voices to share space, ideas, and creative ambition.

Opening to the public today, Saturday 4 July – 30 August, the exhibition brings together conversations on personal identity, Welsh mythology, cultural boundaries, working‑class visibility, body image, memory, and love. These themes unfold across the gallery with sensitivity and intent, revealing how painting continues to shape and challenge our understanding of contemporary life in Wales.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the depth, diversity, and vitality of true contemporary Welsh art.
