The Quintet, featuring flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet & French horn, help us continue to celebrate György Kurtág’s 100th birthday with an early masterpiece, his Wind Quintet, alongside exhilarating contemporary music by a varied group of composers, not least Ligeti with his quirky and witty Six Bagatelles, Kvandal’s Wind Quintet, Arnold’s Three Shanties drawing upon traditional sea songs, and MacMillan’s haunting and expressive Untold. The programme brings out the contrasting qualities of the constituent instruments to showcase the group’s virtuosity.

We have an superb season of eight concerts between May and November, with an amazing range of music: twenty-two instruments, works from four centuries, twelve countries and forty composers; famous favourites and rarely heard masterpieces, such as Tippett’s The Blue Guitar, Schoenberg’s Wind Quintet and Mahler’s First Symphony transcribed by his friend and champion, Bruno Walter, part of our celebration of the great conductor, born 150 years ago. Unfortunately, the concert by Hamish Strathdee on Sunday the 22nd has had to be cancelled. Hamish is stranded in Australia, unable to get a flight, because of the conflict in the Iranian Gulf. If you have already bought a ticket, you will be offered a ticket. If you have any queries, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
