Originally for sale as a greetings card at the Turner Contemporary shop last winter, I have recently repainted this whole image for the Wintertide exhibition at The Eclectic Art Gallery in Margate as ‘originals only’ are the order of the day, as is commonplace. (This was a hybrid as a card, half traditionally painted (backdrop) and the rest painted with a digital pen (the people).

Positioned as ‘Art to brighten a winter’s day in Margate’ the show has started already and runs until the 2nd of March 2023.

It follows the spirit of my earlier ‘Herne Bay Skaters’ image, inspired by the severe winter in the month that I was born, January 1963, when the local seas froze in Kent.

(The show is in two stages and my painting will be up only from 2 Feb until the 2nd of March 2023).

Following the popularity of the Herne Bay Skaters and Margate Skaters illustrations and since last year The Turner Contemporary’s refreshing keenness to showing more work from Have a Gander, I’ve commissioned local drone photographer Alexander of to bring my imagined birds-eye image of the steps and harbour, to life.
It was tricky to brief but I knew I wanted the steps to be a big part with a backdrop of the Turner but if you can’t fly you have to ‘wing it’!
So imagine this picture with a healthy dose of ‘artists’ licence’ - festooned with all that is lovely about summer in a seaside town, people dotted everywhere (the tide will be in), paddling/paddle boarding, cycling and hiking, sunbathing and sailing, beer-drinking, maybe just thinking, swimming and skimming, you get the picture. We’ll, you will soon. Watch this creative space.
