Taking inspiration from one of animated cinemas early masters-Oskar Fischinger!
Join Lucy for a look at one of the masters of early cinema, Oskar Fischinger. A German-American filmaker who created abstract animations and was notable for his abstract musical animations made decades before the appearance of computer graphics or music videos.
In 1938 he create a short film ‘Optical Poem’ which is an abstract animation set to Franz Liszt’s ‘Second Hungarian Rhapsody’ and is the inspiration for this weeks class.

The patterns of repeated circles that overlay and change in scale in the film are hand painted are the most beautiful hues of pinks and reds to replicate with pastels.
We will be using soft pastels on dark paper to replicate the visual impact you get from watching the film!

Dynamic portraits by female artist Chantal Joffe are this week’s inspiration!

LIVE ONLINE CLASS: Sunday 22nd March 10.30am GMT

Chantal Joffe is a British painter, known for her arresting portraits of women. Working from photographs, she uses broad, fluid brushstrokes to animate her subjects. Ranging in scale from a few inches square to monumental canvases, her iconic depictions, which are often imbued with humour, are a joyful example of loose and playful portrait style.
We will be creating two paintings in the class, using watercolours and pencil to make our versions of Chantal Joffe’s two wonderfully portraits of female sitters.

MATERIALS LIST:
-2 x sheets of watercolour paper
-Watercolour paints
-a few brushes of small-large
-a pencil and eraser
