🌊 BAHR SAMANDAR 🌊

18 weeks of creativity, collaboration, stories, languages, laughter and community — culminating in Bahr Samandar, a performance created by an extraordinary group of refugees, asylum seekers and first-generation migrants living in Kent.

The sea became a starting point for exploring memory, movement, connection and belonging. Through theatre, multilingual storytelling and play, participants brought their own experiences, languages and imaginations into the room and shaped the performance together.

In this video, they share what PROJEKT ENCOUNTER meant to them — the experience of creating together, finding community, having their voices heard, and making something that belongs to all of them.

This year also marked a new chapter for PROJEKT ENCOUNTER, hosted for the first time by , where PROJEKT UTOPIA is a resident company.

Led by migrant artist with and plus gorgeous design by James Frost, and sound engineering and technical support from Andrew Tye.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, volunteered and supported the project, and to The National Lottery Community Fund and ARK Cliftonville for making it possible.

🇨🇳 PROJEKT UTOPIA is going to China!

This October, we’ll be joining the ChinaSPAF Pitch Session to share DESIRE MAPS with presenters and programmers from across China.

We’re excited to share our work and explore what conversations around migration, imagination and future-making might open up in a new context — and, most importantly, meeting people, exchanging ideas and seeing where new connections might lead.

📢 Places are filling up for IMMERSION LAB #2 📢

One of the best things about IMMERSION LAB is the experience of spending a whole week in a room with other artists: trying things out, taking creative risks, sharing practices and discovering new ways of making.

Past participants described the week as:

'A stimulating week of artistic enquiry in a safe space and a treasure trove of different compelling approaches and methods'

And:

'Inspiring, hopeful, nourishing.'

For our second edition, we’re bringing together five exceptional artists, each leading a full-day workshop exploring the body as a starting point for generating performance.

Expect physical improvisation, movement scores, somatic practices, choreographic tools, ensemble composition, task-based performance and plenty of experimentation.

Open to directors, performers, devisers, choreographers, movement artists and interdisciplinary makers of any background.

Workshops are led by Ewa Emini, Ingrid Mackinnon, Lucinka Eisler, Amit Lahav and Ayse Tashkiran.

IMMERSION LAB is back. 🔥

Five days. Five artists. Five radically different approaches to making performance through the body.

This October, join us for the second edition of IMMERSION LAB—a week-long programme exploring embodied approaches to performance-making.

Across the week, you'll work with five exceptional artists, each sharing their own methodology for generating ideas, dramaturgy and performance material through movement. Expect physical improvisation, choreographic tools, movement scores, ensemble composition, task-based performance and more.

Whether you're a performer, choreographer, director, deviser, movement artist or interdisciplinary maker, this is an opportunity to expand your practice, experiment alongside other artists, and discover new ways of making work that feels urgent, alive and deeply embodied.

IMMERSION LAB #2: Generating Performance Through the Body

IMMERSION LAB returns for its second edition—a week-long workshop series bringing together artists to share approaches to performance-making through embodied practice.

Following our first edition, which explored documentary material, archives and verbatim text, this next workshop focuses on the body as a primary tool for generating scenic material. We're interested in practices that begin with movement, action and physical presence, using the body to devise, compose and discover performance.

Across five days, established migrant artists will lead workshops on physical improvisation, movement scores, ensemble composition, choreographic tools, task-based performance, image-making, spatial awareness, and other embodied approaches to creating work.

The workshops will take place 5–9 October, 10am–5pm, at ArtsAdmin in London, and are open to directors, performers, choreographers, movement artists, devisers and interdisciplinary makers who are interested in expanding their creative practice through experimentation, exchange and collective learning.

Each day will be led by a different practitioner, offering participants the opportunity to experience a range of artistic languages and processes over the course of the week. The group is limited to 22 participants to create an intimate, practical and supportive environment.

It's been a little over a month since opening DESIRE MAPS at Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg - what a brilliant time we had ✨

Explore the production with these gorgeous photos from our dress rehearsal, taken by Matthew Coulton.

DESIRE MAPS is map-making performance for 3 actors and 8 audience volunteers, exploring migration, maps and memory through live projection illustration, movement and sound.

DESIRE MAPS is available for touring from late 2026 and beyond 🌏

Created over 18 weeks by participants in our PROJEKT ENCOUNTER, this devised performance led by the fantastic Francisca Stangel and Olha Smolyk is a celebration of the sea and all its meanings.
