The Summerhouse Gallery is a beautiful space that shows a wide variety of paintings, bespoke jewellery, ceramics and glass. The aim is to provide a welcoming environment that shows the very best of Cornish/South West linked artists. Whilst a visitor may recognise established w

ork by painters such as Michael Strang, Mike Hindle, John Piper and Michael Praed; there is also the opportunity to discover new, rising talents - Kate Richardson and Imogen Bone to name just two. The Summerhouse endeavours to have a selection of work on show that cannot be found anywhere else. Since opening in June 2011, The Summerhouse Gallery has received nothing but praise from the press and public alike. Cornwall Today said: ‘In just a few months, The Summerhouse has established itself as one of the best galleries in West Cornwall’ whilst ‘this is cornwall’ described the ‘Winter Light’ exhibition as ‘the perfect antidote to the winter blues’. The future is bright for The Summerhouse Gallery. Whether you are local to the area or a visitor, an art enthusiast or simply a person with a small interest in artwork; one thing is sure. Iona Sanders

This Thursday, we are delighted to open the doors to a remarkable new collection of paintings by long-standing gallery artist, Iona Sanders.

Iona has been exhibiting with The Summerhouse for over a decade and has established herself as one of Cornwall’s most exciting contemporary painters.

Working from her beautiful studio in Newlyn, Iona has created a vibrant and uplifting collection of still-life paintings, full of colour, character and joy. The works are already generating considerable interest this week, and they haven’t even been hung on the walls yet!

The collection will launch online at 6pm on Thursday 18th June and will be on display in the gallery from the same day. If you have the opportunity to see the paintings in person, we highly recommend a visit.

Lucy Joines’ passion for ceramics began in childhood, inspired by her grandmother’s pottery and a lifelong fascination with working in clay.

Lucy’s work is deeply inspired by nature and the wild landscapes of her childhood on a family farm in North Devon. The hare, a recurring motif in her ceramics, reflects treasured memories of fleeting sightings across the fields and the sense of wonder that shaped her early years. Lucy incorporates gold lustre into her work as a symbol of magic, nostalgia, and the enduring enchantment of childhood.

A new collection by Jill Hudson is now available to view and purchase from our website.

Jill had a lot of fun creating this collection for us, and it shows! The colours and playful mark-making create such a sense of joy.

We recently asked Jill what her favourite part of the creative process is, to which she responded:

“It’s kind of happening all the time, when I take a walk, when I go for a swim, seeing subjects and colours and ideas and maybe just absorbing the will to paint, or the need to paint. Lots of little bits of my experience go into a painting, sometimes obviously and sometimes just in the background. So, I suppose I love that it’s going on in the background all the time”

Introducing a new artist to The Summerhouse: Chloe Elliott

Chloe Elliott is an artist based in Cornwall, whose work draws heavily from the raw beauty and ever-changing character of the Cornish coastline. After beginning her studies with a Foundation degree at Kingston University London, she later followed her enduring connection to the sea to Falmouth University, where she completed a BA (Hons) in Illustration.

Chloe Elliott’s recent swimmer paintings capture fleeting moments along the Cornish coast — figures emerging from the sea, pausing at the water’s edge, or resting on the beach after a swim. Through expressive brushwork and a restrained palette, these works explore the connection between people, place and memory. Inspired by the rituals of sea swimming, the paintings celebrate the quiet joy, freedom and reflection found in these everyday experiences. Elliott’s work seeks to preserve these small but meaningful moments, revealing how a simple swim can become part of our lasting relationship with a landscape.

Céline Gilart 🍋

Céline creates vibrant, colourful and expressive paintings inspired by the beauty of everyday moments. Her work ranges from luminous still lifes featuring bright citrus fruits, figs and flowers to atmospheric seascapes, all united by a bold and joyful use of colour. Working from her garden studio, she often develops several paintings simultaneously, allowing palettes and ideas to flow naturally between pieces. Drawn to rich oranges, yellows, blues and greens, Céline approaches painting as both a creative and reflective practice, embracing the meditative process of becoming fully immersed in colour, composition and light.

What a week! Summer has well and truly arrived, and it’s been so lovely to see Marazion full of happy faces ☺️

Here’s a little look around the gallery for anyone who hasn’t been able to visit us yet! We’re currently showing a large collection of work by Michael Praed, alongside a mixed artist collection that gives a glimpse of the variety of work we have available. So many different styles under one roof, and we love every one of them!

Looking ahead, we have a feature exhibition for Iona Sanders opening in mid-June, alongside a mixed artist show. Then, on July 10th, we’ll be opening the doors to Kit Johns’ solo show, always a highlight of the year!

New works by Jill Hudson are making their way to the gallery soon ✨

Inspired by long coastal walks, vivid summer colour, and moments of quiet daydreaming in the studio, these new oil paintings capture Jill’s personal experience of Cornwall in summer, where crocosmia and gorse blaze against turquoise-green seas.

“Sometimes I wonder if the colours are too much… but when the sun is out along the coast path, it really is that vivid.”

From narrative still lifes to scenes gathered from her coastal roamings, each painting holds fragments of observation, memory, and atmosphere.
