Shimara first came to Unanima after being referred through psychology services.

Now?

She’s performing.
Working professionally through the Oliver McGowan training programme.
Living independently.
Travelling.
Growing in confidence.
Building a life on her own terms.

Nobody “saved” Shimara.
She was always capable of more.

She just needed people to stop treating her like she wasn’t.

And honestly? She’s only getting started.

Disabled artists do not need pity applause.

They need access.
Opportunity.
Training.
Investment.
Standards.
Paid work.
Representation.

Applauding someone purely because they’re disabled is not inclusion. It’s lowering the bar.

At Unanima, we believe disabled artists deserve the same thing every artist deserves:
To be taken seriously.

Calling all carers of learning disabled and autistic people. 📢

We want to hear from you.

What’s working?
What isn’t?
What barriers are getting in the way of creative opportunities, support, and access?

These playful, creative workshops with art therapist Sharon Herriot are a space for honest conversation, shared experiences, and real discussion, with tea, cake and coffee included ☕🍰

Not every artist starts on a stage.

Some start by finally being given a chance.

Human Artist is our entry-level theatre programme for learning disabled and autistic people wanting to explore performance, creativity, and theatre-making properly, not as a box-ticking exercise.

It’s a space to try things, develop skills, build confidence, and figure out what people are actually good at.

Some go on to comedy.
Some move into theatre.
Some discover they hate being on stage entirely.

That’s the point.
Real opportunity means being given the chance to find out.

This is Will 👋

He's been busy making audiences laugh for a while now, and proving that comedy stages are better when disabled artists are actually given the mic. 🎤

From reaching the final of 'Disabled Comedian of the Year' to performing through Unanima projects and live events, Will’s comedy career keeps growing and we’re proud to be part of the journey.

Sharp wit, brilliant timing, and absolutely no interest in playing it safe.

Exactly how we like it.

These performers - they just HAVE to have the final word. 🙄😂

Sam and Ollie are actually practising an exercise during our weekly theatre company training at Unanima. 🎭

Turns out arguing professionally is a genuine performance skill.

Too many learning disabled and autistic people are still being underestimated, patronised, excluded or written off completely.

We’re not interested in lowering the bar.
We’re interested in removing the barriers.

At Unanima, we believe disabled artists deserve proper opportunities, proper investment and proper representation - not tokenism, not pity, not applause for simply existing.

Talent is talent.
Ambition matters.
Access matters.
Representation matters.

And ableism should feel as unacceptable as racism.

We’re not backing down. 💪
