Another fabulous review 🤩🤘 Thank you TheatreBean

Last night Team Bean were thrilled to return to Mansfield Palace Theatre to see HMTC’s production of American Idiot. Last year we saw this talented company take on Little Shop of Horrors and left in awe of not only the talent shown, but the extraordinary ex*****on too! Over the last year, we have been fortunate in seeing many of the cast take on various other roles in neighbouring companies, and it felt special to return to Mansfield for this production.

"American Idiot" is a musical based on the concept album of the same name by the punk rock band Green Day. The plot follows three young men – Johnny, Will, and Tunny – as they navigate life in a post-9/11 world. Johnny and Tunny leave their suburban town to seek meaning and purpose in the big city, while Will stays behind with his pregnant girlfriend. The story explores themes of disillusionment, rebellion, and the search for identity against the backdrop of political and social unrest. As the characters face personal struggles and the consequences of their choices, the musical features energetic performances of Green Day's songs, including hits like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Holiday," and, of course, "American Idiot."

Beginning with its technical merits, the show was a marvel of cinematography, with standout moments like the breathtaking entrance of St. Jimmy leaving the audience spellbound. With projections expertly crafted by Paul Young, the atmosphere and ambience was perfectly created providing a feast for the eyes. Without the need for elaborate scenery, this modern twist added a unique edge to HMTC’s production and I LOVED IT! Combined with Stephen Greatorex’s lighting, the ex*****on of this performance was elevated further, defying the limits of amateur theatre. For those not typically drawn to theatre, this production showcased true artistry. The staging alone was so exceptional that I would consider returning solely for that aspect. It was flawless in every regard.

The high-energy pace of the performance was matched by Shannon O’Donnell’s dynamic choreography, keeping viewers enthralled and reflecting the intensity of the music. The live band seamlessly integrated with the theatrical elements, enhancing the original album's aesthetic.

HMTC impressed me last year with their online and front-of-house marketing efforts, and I'm delighted to say Paul Young and Ben Sherwin have elevated the game even further. The videos and photographs used to promote this production surpass those of any other company I've encountered, and it's worth acknowledging their exceptional quality in this review. From the stunning programmes to the captivating cast announcement videos and Chris Clarke’s stage photography, every aspect of their marketing is truly breathtaking.

Johnny’s character serves as a central figure in the narrative, representing the angst and rebellion of the younger generation. Andrew Bould delivered a compelling portrayal, skillfully embodying the complexities of his character and adeptly navigating the emotional nuances of each scene. Close friend Tunny is depicted as restless and discontent with his small-town life, much like Johnny. He eventually decides to leave town to seek adventure and purpose by joining the military. Throughout the musical, Tunny grapples with the consequences of his decision, including the physical and emotional toll of war. Curtis Salmon showcased a raw vocal talent and emotional depth.

Arden-Casper Jennison again showcased his smooth vocal ability in the role of Will. Will chooses to stay in their hometown, hoping to find meaning and fulfillment in his relationships and everyday existence. However, he also faces challenges and struggles, particularly in his romantic relationship with his girlfriend, Heather played by Katy Gaskin. Jennison has graced numerous productions in the past year, portraying both leading roles and smaller characters with equal fervor and charm. Regardless of the role's size, his undeniable passion and endearing presence shine through. Seeing his name in the program always brings me joy! The three friends had a wonderful comradery between one another.

St. Jimmy is a charismatic and mysterious figure who serves as a symbol of rebellion and self-destruction. St. Jimmy serves as a mentor and alter ego to Johnny, leading him down a path of recklessness and addiction. He embodies the darker aspects of Johnny’s personality and represents the temptations and vices that Johnny grapples with throughout the musical. Jack Readyhoof’s standout performance exuded the chaotic energy of the role while also conveying moments of poignant vulnerability, particularly evident in the heartfelt rendition of "When It's Time." Readyhoof is undoubtedly a phenomenal actor who is a delight to see in any role he takes on. I look forward to seeing what other roles he has in store this year.

Alana Moran takes on the role of Whatsername with a Magnetic presence. Serving as Johnny’s love interest Whatsername’s character is somewhat enigmatic, and her name is never revealed in the musical, hence the nickname “Whatsername.” She represents Johnny’s desire for connection and redemption as he navigates through the challenges of his life. Moran was visually captivating throughout and showed her exceptional dance skills.

Evie Burke in the role of Extraordinary Girl impressed with her vocal prowess while Candice Curnow-Newland brought powerhouse vocals as the Recruiter. Both part of Tunny’s story line, Extraordinary Girl appears in Tunny’s hallucinations while he is recovering from injuries sustained during his military service while The recruiter serves as a catalyst for Tunny’s journey from small-town life to the battlefield.

The entire cast delivered an electrifying performance, infusing the stage with passion and energy. While I'm not usually drawn to jukebox musicals, this production's ex*****on made it thoroughly enjoyable, offering a refreshing take I hadn't experienced before. Kudos to Director Kheenan Jones for orchestrating a triumphant show, showcasing his talent both on and offstage. It's no surprise that I'm inclined to give this production a well-deserved 5-star rating.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to Lucy Young for inviting Team Bean along, and I do hope to return for your next production.

5* review for 'truly remarkable for an amateur company' production of American Idiot by HMTC https://eastmidlandstheatre.com/2024/04/26/review-american-idiot-heanor-musical-theatre-company-mansfield-palace-theatre/

This show is undoubtedly written for fans of the original album, but even if you are unfamiliar with Green Day’s music, this adrenaline-fuelled musical is not to be missed. The band, the set and the cast work seamlessly together to create a fun-filled show that explores some very serious ideas in very exciting ways.
