✨ Spotlight Sunday ✨

This week we’re shining a light on Funky Alumni 🌟 who has been announced as one of the lead cast for an exciting project happening right here in Mansfield!
Mansfield Community Theatre has secured Arts Council funding for a major research and development project, and Anna will be working on this in the coming weeks. Their aim is to bring local heritage to life for everyone—through acting, singing and dancing, they retell the stories that make Mansfield so special. 🎭

🗣️ Anna says:
“ Throughout my training at Funky and in Bristol we were always encouraged to lean in to the things that make you unique and my Midlands heritage is something that I have become increasingly proud of. Getting the chance to workshop a new writing that involves real stories and people from the community that I grew up in is a complete honour! ”

We are so proud of Anna, who finished her training recently at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and her career is already starting to take great shape. Watch this space—this is just the beginning! 💫

Our incredible intermediate actors are currently in training with Funky Tutor Liv, diving into their script and scene work 📖🎬 and developing their skills more every single week!

⭐ The group have been exploring characters by looking at Laban technique and are now putting them into script work. ⭐

Even though we’re in showcase term, training has always been—and always will be—at the heart of what Funky is all about 💛

We are passionate about:

🌟 Spotlight Sunday – Taking Opportunities! 🌟

At Funky, we’re always striving to provide the highest quality training possible, helping our students develop the skills, confidence, and experience needed for drama school auditions and beyond.

We’re also passionate about supporting our students in seeking opportunities outside of Funky that complement and enhance their training. Taking initiative, gaining new experiences, and learning from industry professionals are all valuable steps on the journey into the performing arts industry.

This week, one of our alumni, who currently works for recently returned to Funky to lead a workshop and invited our students to attend a session at The Actor’s Lab Manchester. With it being half-term, many students were away, but Emily and Niamh were proactive, signed up, and made the most of the opportunity.

Here’s what they had to say:

💗 Emily:
“The opportunity to have another workshop with Alfie was amazing! We worked on ‘de-mystifying’ the drama school audition process through acting technique, contemporary monologue exploration, and classical monologues. Alfie also gave us a great insight into PPA and what they have to offer. It was a great experience and built upon what I’ve already been doing in my training at Funky.”

✨ Niamh:
“The Actor’s Lab in Manchester was super helpful in understanding how to choose a monologue for auditions, both contemporary and classical, in a really open and safe space.”

A huge well done to Emily and Niamh for embracing this opportunity. Experiences like these are invaluable and will be hugely beneficial as they continue preparing for future drama school auditions.

🎭✨ INDUSTRY INSIGHT ✨🎭

We’re taking a peek inside the rehearsal room as we celebrate our incredible Funky alumni, , who opened this week in The Greatest Showman Live! Tour in Germany! 🇩🇪🎶

Kyle is performing multiple roles in the production — including the iconic role of Barnum — bringing to life the unforgettable songs from The Greatest Showman alongside a spectacular 20-piece orchestra. 🎺✨

Speaking to Kyle this week, he shared how excited he is to be part of this amazing show and how much he’s loving every moment with the incredible company.
We are beyond proud of Kyle and everything he is achieving. Watching our alumni thrive in the industry and live their dreams is exactly what it’s all about! 🌟👏

✨Spotlight Sunday ✨

This week, some of our Funky students had the exciting opportunity to go and see Funky Alumni in the current National Tour of Legally Blonde at , where she is playing the role of Vivienne 💖

Of course, we were completely blown away and utterly, ridiculously proud of her ✨ Watching our alumni absolutely smash this industry is so special — and being able to take our current students to see that first-hand is just incredible. It’s so inspiring for them to see Annabelle up on that stage where they all aspire to be 🌟

We absolutely love following our alumni journeys, and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for Annabelle after this tour 💫

✨ Spotlight Sunday - Exciting Opportunity for Our Funky Students! ✨

Funky Studios and are continuing their fantastic ongoing collaboration — and this time, some of our most senior Funky students will be taking to the stage as backing vocalists at the upcoming Solstice Summerfest - - at Duffield this June! 🎤🪩

They’ll be performing as part of an incredible 60-piece orchestra, on a massive stage in front of a huge crowd — an unforgettable, real-world performance experience!

This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for our students. We’re all about giving them real-life, professional experiences as part of their training, and we’re so grateful to Limelight for making this possible. 💛

✨ INDUSTRY INSIGHT ✨

Our students had a fantastic opportunity this week as , one of our incredible Funky alumni who is the outreach officer for returned to work with our IDSP and Senior Acting Group 🎭

Alfie spoke to our students about life at PPA Drama School and delivered an inspiring acting workshop filled with valuable insight, guidance, and encouragement.

Opportunities like this are so exciting for our students — giving them the chance to learn more, explore their options, and gain a real insight into drama school training and the industry beyond.

We are forever grateful for the amazing network we have built and for the opportunities we are able to bring to our students here at Funky. 💫

A huge thank you to Alfie for being so inspiring and for continuing to support and guide the next generation as they begin their own drama school journeys. ❤️

✨ We’re incredibly proud to be involved in this very special charity ball ✨

Funky Studios are honoured to be supporting the Heart and Music Ball in support of Child Bereavement UK & Jon Orton Scholarship Charity Ball, taking place on 3rd October at the stunning Kelham Hall, Newark.

This is a cause incredibly close to our hearts. Jon Orton was not only a vital part of our Funky faculty bringing a wealth of experience and talent - he was our ‘music man’ 🎶 but Jon was there from the beginning and a very central part of the Funky family 🩷

Jon’s belief in our students, his unwavering support, and his infectious passion for the arts left a lasting impact on all who knew and were taught by him. We were heartbroken to lose Jon, but we’re honoured to know that his legacy lives on through our music and the scholarship in his name.

The ball is being organised by Cat, our Funky Tutor and Jon’s widow, making this an especially meaningful event for us to be part of.

Child Bereavement UK does vital work supporting children, young people and families as they rebuild their lives following the death of someone important to them. Alongside this, the Jon Orton Scholarship, in partnership with the Limelight Orchestra and Narrow Road Agency, helps young aspiring professional performers access training opportunities they otherwise couldn’t afford.

Expect an evening full of glitz, glamour and sparkles ✨ — a chance to dress to impress, enjoy fantastic food, and experience outstanding entertainment, all in support of an amazing cause.
