We take a developmental movement approach, which means looking beyond the physical milestones at the detail of how little human bodies establish themselves in the world.

How this goes is hugely affected by the environment bodies find themselves in (physical, social and cultural) as well as by their own unique make up (heredity and personality).

We adults actively create the environments that children learn in, so our knowledge and understanding and our beliefs and values, support (or limit) what children can do.

Check out the link in our bio for the Floor Play Foundations Online Course to dip beneath the milestones.

Physical development has implications way beyond whether a child can hop, skip, do up zips and buttons, hold a pencil or sit still.

It's bigger than their attitude to physical health and fitness; or their ability to use embodied means to support the cognitive curriculum.

Itโ€™s ultimately about how they perceive themselves and how they feel in the world. And how they ground everything they do (all their learning and actions) in sensory and physical experience.

Their relationship with their body affects how they feel, see, think, understand, problem solve and regulate. As well as move.

Movement is our first language.

Before children use verbal language they speak eloquently with their body.

Itโ€™s a powerful tool to make and build friendships and relationships and to let people know how they feel.

Humans learn as much in their bodies as they do in their heads.

From the get-go , babies and children perceptions, ideas and thoughts - their lives - are deeply influenced by their physical experience, the lived experience of being a body
how it feels
the signals and messages it gives them
what it can do
how it supports and frames commununication and relationship

This was a great space to move in.

We have just spent 2 days with the Derbyshire County Council Services for Schools - being active, brave and connected to re-imagine physical development in the Early Years.

We often ask practitioners, when we are together on a course, to practice articulating why they have a Movement Play Area in the classroom.

There are many different people, who will visit your setting and they have never seen a Movement Play Area before.
They will want to know more about it.

These are some of our favourite responses. How do you talk about yours?

"It would be good to see photographs of a variety of Movement Play Areas"

We were asked this yesterday. So we are sharing photographs, with you all, of Movement Play Areas from across the UK.

Every early years setting makes a Movement Play Area work for their children and their learning environment.

There are things that they all have in common:
- It is indoors
- It is a clear space - with access to some resources
- It is for child led, spontaneous movement play that children find for themselves

We want children to grow up:

๐Ÿ˜ƒ feeling great in their own skin

๐Ÿคธ able to learn in their bodies as much as in their heads

โญ carrying the highest levels of vitality, body confidence and physical engagement into their adult lives

If this excites you, this is what we are looking for;

๐Ÿ‘‰ You must love to play, and feel that it is one of the key ways we human beings explore ourselves and our world

๐Ÿ‘‰ You might be a body worker, dancer or an acrobat; you may be involved in physical play or physical sport. Some other kind of movement practice might be at the core of your life

๐Ÿ‘‰ You must be an excellent teacher with experience of teaching / facilitating learning

๐Ÿ‘‰ You appreciate research, as an underpinning for quality practice - and be happy to build a strong theoretical base to ground the practice

๐Ÿ‘‰ You will have total respect for the ways children learn in their bodies as well as their heads and be keen to develop understanding about how this happens

Childrenโ€™s ability to develop their body learning and body intelligence is greatly affected by the environment around them. This includes the physical spaces and resources, and also the attitudes and values that adults bring to the movement children choose.

Children need an indoor learning area dedicated to body learning, as well as outdoor space where movement is valued. A Movement Play Area creates a valued space for child-led. spontaneous free flow movement play.

Take a look at our online course- Setting Up a Movement Play Area to learn more.
