I really enjoyed reading your comments on my last post, so I thought I’d share another couple of paintings in contrasting styles and see what you think.

The first was painted by following a tutorial by an artist I greatly admire, Kanta Harusaki, while the second is an original piece of my own.

The first takes a more traditional and atmospheric approach, while the second is much looser, with more emphasis on colour, light and suggestion rather than detail. I’m really enjoying experimenting with both styles at the moment and seeing how differently the same medium can be used.

So here’s a thing… 😊

I’ve been tinkering with different painting styles for a while now and I’m still experimenting with all aspects of the medium, but especially with the style I eventually want to commit to.

The first of these two is a more traditional approach, while the second is much more fluid and semi-abstract.

I have to admit, it’s the second version that I’m more drawn to. There’s something about the looseness and freedom of it that really appeals to me.

FIGURE STUDY – pt 5

I’ve had such a good time playing around with this loose figure technique, and I’ve learned a lot along the way. Here’s another example of what can happen when you free yourself up a bit from all those usual constraints and just stop overthinking things.

I’m still very new to this way of working, but I’m really enjoying the freedom it gives me and, more importantly, I’m having fun with it!

FIGURE STUDY – Pt. 4

As I continue exploring watercolour figures and studying the work of artists I admire, I feel I’m slowly starting to develop a style of my own — something that’s becoming more recognisable in my work.

I should emphasise that these latest pieces are studies inspired by the original work of an artist I greatly admire, Tansu Ozmen, rather than my own original compositions.

I’m still very much at the beginning of this journey, with plenty left to learn, but I’m really enjoying the process of experimenting and gradually finding my own approach.

Hopefully, in time, I’ll be able to share paintings here that I can proudly say are completely my own. 😊

Figure Study - pt 3

Here’s another quick study inspired by the work of Tansu Ozmen. I’m learning this loose figure technique by studying his work, and I’m really drawn to his loose, expressive watercolour style, so I had a lot of fun trying to bring some of that energy into this piece. If you enjoy atmospheric watercolours, his work is definitely worth exploring.

I was aiming to capture the mood of this cityscape, though I found balancing the values quite challenging. Looking back, I think I could have pushed the lights and darks much further, but I’m still pleased with how the study came together. I’m very new to this kind of painting, and there’s so much I’m still learning—but that’s also what makes the process exciting.

FIGURE STUDY - pt 2

Last one of the evening! I’ve been quite productive tonight with these figure studies, made a little easier by sticking to my A5 sketchbook and resisting the urge to get bogged down in details or overthink the finished result.

I’m really enjoying this approach, so I’ll definitely keep practising. It’s great fun and very rewarding! 😊

FIGURE STUDIES.

One of my colleagues mentioned this morning that the loose figure studies I had done previously are some of her favourite paintings. It inspired me to go home and have another go at a few more.

These are studies inspired by the work of Tansu Özmen, whose work I greatly admire, rather than my own original compositions. I’m particularly drawn to his loose approach to figures, atmosphere and the way he suggests so much without getting caught up in the detail.

That’s something I’m trying to embrace too — not overworking things, trusting the process and letting the watercolour do some of the work.

I’m still very much learning with this style, but I’m really enjoying the freedom it gives me. I hope there’s something in one of these that you like.😊
