GASP! is back for its fourth year with over 50 short films and 9 feature-length films, including the yearly Mystery Q***r Classic!

This year, GASP! returns to Cultplex for another three-day celebration of diversity within genre cinema and will start with a creepy Halloween-based slasher with a feline twist in Tim Cruz’s Don’t Let the Cat Out and will end with Roger Conners’ super q***r, super gory and super stylish slasher, Meat.

Throughout the weekend, other highlights include a 40th anniversary screening of the camp creature feature musical remake, Little Shop of Horrors; two found footage films, including Don’t Look in the Dark, a unique take on the subgenre that provides a different experience for each viewer, and Cat Cam, an eerie supernatural film with the bonus of an adorable cat protagonist; and Fox & the Tiny Demon, the first ever feature-length animated film to be screened at the festival, which accompanies another first, the brand new fifth Short Film Showcase, which focuses entirely on animated shorts.

We're super excited to have debut screening and live Q&A with C.O.F.F.I.N and the director on August 12th!

A short documentary following C.O.F.F.I.N from their beginnings as teenagers on Sydney’s Northern Beaches to becoming one of Australia’s most respected contemporary rock’n’roll bands.

Told through over 20 years of archival footage, interviews, unseen material and life on the road, the film explores how persistence, friendship and the surrounding culture of the Northern Beaches shaped the band’s identity, music and worldview.

At the centre of the story are the decades-long friendships that built C.O.F.F.I.N, from founding members Ben Portnoy and Abijah Rado, who began performing together at age 12, to the later additions of Aaron Moss and Steven ‘Kosty’ Kostogiannis. Together, the film explores their deep personal bonds and shared history that shaped the band long before the music itself.

Featuring commentary from family, collaborators and figures across the Australian music community, alongside live in-studio performances and early previews of unreleased music, the film offers an intimate inside view into who C.O.F.F.I.N is.

Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie's THE VOID combines elements of John Carpenter classics like ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and THE THING (as well as Clive Barker's HELLRAISER) with their own brand of practical effect wizardry to produce a modern Lovecraftian treat that genuinely feels like a lost VHS classic from the 1980s.

The sixth in a year-long series of feature and short film screenings presented by Obscure Film at Cultplex in 2026!

Each of the Genre Identities programmes will feature two hours of short films by local and international filmmakers, exploring the relationship between themes and concepts of a wide variety of film genres and the identities of the filmmakers and their communities.

This screening features characters and plots involving intersectional aspects of trans and q***r lives, steeped in familiar genre trappings. With some exclusive premieres, the programme includes mystery, experimental film, drama, romance and comedy. This screening also features a special collaboration with the Swedish Archive for Q***r Moving Images (SAQMI), bringing five short films by Swedish q***r and trans filmmakers to UK audiences.

Influenced by the Japanese Kaiju monster movie sub-genre, Pacific Rim was a natural choice for a director who regards the 1966 classic The War of the Gargantuas as a formative cinematic experience. Often cited as one of the defining films of the 2000s due to its dreamlike visuals and pioneering non-linear timeline and unreliable narrators that has gone on to inspire countless films and series.

A visually inventive and emotionally raw exploration of memory, love, and loss, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind follows Joel (Jim Carrey), a reserved man who discovers that his impulsive ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has undergone a medical procedure to erase all memories of their relationship. In a mix of desperation and curiosity, Joel decides to do the same — but as he relives his memories with her as they vanish one by one, he rediscovers just how deeply he loves her.

The film unfolds largely inside Joel’s mind, blending surrealism with grounded emotion as he tries to hide Clementine in forgotten corners of his subconscious in an effort to resist the erasure.
