Curlew is finally complete and joins Barn Owl and Roe Deer as the third work in the Fragmentation series.

Completed over a period of eight months, this one has been a slow burner and an immersive process; bubbling away like the curlew's call it has been meditative in its creation and a way to slow time for a while.

Rooted in the exploration of our human imprint, the Fragmentation series considers how our landscapes are divided, edited and compartmentalised, and how wildlife exists within these altered spaces.

The Curlew is now available to view on my website 😊 (UPDATE: SOLD): https://www.katepriestmanart.com/available-works/fragmentation-originals

Lovely way to spend a few hours yesterday whilst the rain came down. Curlew is beginning to come to life. A long way yet to go on this one but it seems a timely piece to work on in the weeks before spring arrives — each year a pilgrimage of sorts to the Roaches to hear the curlew call.

Finding solace in the fact that spring is only a few weeks away. There's been some wild weather recently but seeing snowdrops flowering, blackthorn blossom developing and green shoots pushing through the saturated earth is a beautiful thing 💚.

Detail from 'Jackdaws'.
I spent the first half of my career living and working in London. During that time I grew to love the gritty, urban spaces that were messy and unkempt, where wildlife managed to quietly inhabit. A fascination I retain to this day. Set in Manchester, I was drawn to this area of the city, where water is contained beneath soaring bridges – intricate, functional and atmospheric. I just had to combine this setting with one of my favourite birds; one that is often overlooked yet has such charismatic presence and beauty, with its pale eyes and distinctive plumage.

'Jackdaws', from my urban wildlife series (22.5 x 15.5 inches).

Jackdaws, from my urban wildlife series, is one of my largest (and one of my favourite) drawings to date 😊. I love seeing these super-sharp and sociable birds. (Links in bio.)

I have limited time in the week to spend on progressing my main art pieces which are usually set up on drawing boards in my workspace, so that's where my sketchbooks step in; they provide a means for me to draw where ever I am and whatever time I have available. This quick sketch of a plant on the windowsill was made whilst cooking dinner, waiting for a pan to come to the boil!

Anyone else combine art and daily tasks? 😊.

If you're interested in peeking behind the scenes, my new book, Sketches: Volume 1, brings together a selection of over 70 sketches and still life studies, spanning the years 2020 to 2025.

Hope you've had a great Christmas. I've been feeling very guilty for only posting one blog post in 2025, so I was determined to finish the year with at least one more (and set an intention to get back to more regular posting in 2026 🙃). My 2025 art review is now live, so if you've a spare few minutes for a read, you can find it here: https://www.katepriestmanart.com/blog/2025-art-review
