"One of the greatest war films ever made. And rightly so... it's a movie of blazing colour, spectacular Natal scenery, gut-wrenching action and superb performances, not least from Michael Caine." Empire Magazine
Zulu screens Sun 22 May as part of Hollywood Blacklistees in Europe: a season of films from American cinema's exiled generation.
Seen by many as a classic British film, Zulu depicts the 1879 battle of Rorke’s Drift which took place during the Anglo-Zulu war. Cy Endfield was blacklisted from Hollywood and later worked extensively in the UK, whilst star and producer Stanley Baker had also collaborated with another blacklistee Joseph Losey.
Today, the film raises questions regarding the representation of the Zulu nation and the success of the film’s perceived anti-imperialist intentions.

Spanish classic Calle Mayor screens in our cinemas Thu 19 May, as part of our Hollywood Blacklistees in Europe season. A super rare screening that's not to be missed!
Isabel is an unmarried woman in a provincial Spanish town. A group of bored local men cruelly plot to embarrass her by feigning a romantic interest. Their prank is linked to the wider class-based social structures of Spain at the time by writer-director Juan Antonio Bardem (uncle of Javier Bardem).
Isabel is played with great subtlety by Betsy Blair, who at the time was a victim of the #hollywoodblacklist. She only agreed to travel to Spain to make Calle Mayor once she had been informed of Bardem’s political opposition to General Franco. Today, the film is considered a classic of Spanish cinema.
