‘Four by Eight’ is getting creative! - DIY Theatre Company

Did you catch our latest news? 💜

We’re on a half term break this week, so what better time to reflect on what we’ve been up to so far this Autumn.

Earlier this year we recruited 6 fantastic musicians: Jodie, Anna, Sophie, Joe, Awen and Benji into our Four by Eight programme. Thanks to Youth Music we have funding for one and a half years for this innovative work.

Learn all about what the fantastic Four by Eight team have been getting up to here:

"Music’s important because you can use music in all different ways. If you can’t use your hands you can use another body part to play an instrument and feel the vibrations. It’s accessible for anyone.”

What an amazing week we’ve had at DIY! 💜

We had a great session working with Sophie Coward to creatively explore lots of different senses.

First of all we explored the five senses of sight, touch, smell, hearing and taste 👁️✋👃👂👅

Then Sophie introduced us to the senses that help us to control our body awareness and spatial orientation.

All of this will help us as we create our new multi-sensory show 'Hanging by a Thread' - watch out for updates!

We had another great session with a fab group of learners at Chatsworth Futures last week.

DIY is running sensory theatre sessions on the theme of identity every week at Chatsworth Futures. We're visiting lots of different multi-sensory planets - each with their own identity.

Last week, we visited a cold planet and a watery planet. Then the group made these wonderful planets. 🪐

Can't wait to see where our journey will take us next!

Happy Tuesday all!

Huge shout out to Jenny Harris who facilitated a workshop with members of the DIY team last week about Leadership.

Jenny is currently undertaking a piece of development work for DIY to support us in setting up our exciting new Leading Edge programme.

She is chatting with other organisations to find out about best practice in increasing volunteering and paid work opportunities for people with lived experience of learning disability.

Thank you to the incredible National Lottery Community Fund for the support 💜

Happy World Mental Health Day 💜

Mental health is central to all we do at DIY, and last years’ BUDS: ReConnect project was centred around reconnecting with ourselves, our mental wellbeing and the world around us.

The BUDS Re: Connect project supported people with learning disabilities to:

✨Connect – developing inter-personal skills, improving social networks and relationships – reducing loneliness and isolation.

✨Take Notice – developing improvisation and devising skills that require focus
– feeling more connected to others and the world around them.

✨Keep Learning – creating a space for exploration and reflection on the ways in which we inter-connect.

✨Give – exploring what participants o er as individuals and as a group – increasing self-esteem and sense of purpose.

✨Be Active – engaging in movement activities that encourage an active lifestyle.

Our DIY BUDS Re:Connect Project was generously supported by the National Lottery Community Fund through their Awards for All Programme.

We’re celebrating UK Disability History Month by sharing some of the personal reflections and recommendations of our colleagues and students from across the . Today, Professor Matt Morgan, Deputy Dean, recommends 'Following Patient 36', by DIY Theatre Company:

“I would like to recommend watching/listening to/reading ‘Following Patient 36’, a performance piece by the Salford-based Learning Disability Theatre Company, DIY: https://www.diytheatre.org.uk/how-to-take-part/following-patient-36-resources/

"It was planned for live performance this summer but because of the pandemic DIY have created an online multimedia production that lasts about 20-30 minutes.

“It is a moving and fascinating piece exploring the lived experience of people with learning disabilities in the 20th century, from the introduction of the Mental Deficiency Act 1913 to the closing of institutions in the 1980s and 1990s, and Care In The Community. If you have ever wondered what it really means to be ‘institutionalised’ this will tell you. Highly recommended.”
