Fin-de-siècle
Rag Gallery in Chorlton, Manchester
Friday 16th December 2022
6:00pm til 2:00am (Last entry 10:00pm)
Minimum Age: 18
On The Rag's final showcase for 2022. An evening of celebration and a show filled with hope for an alternate future. Come, be decadent, degenerate.
There is a delicate beauty that can be found in decay, the slow creeping expansion of rust, lichen and patina. Reclaiming the metal and wood cloven/carved from them; crumbling cathedral skeletons, the rib cage/belly of the industrial beast.
Forgotten spaces populate post-industrial cities such as Manchester, passive viewers of a changing and growing city, cloaked in disrepair they huddle as silent watchers marking both past and distant future as they subside into nature, awaiting the re-design, re-purpose and redevelopment that denotes a cities evolution. In this unique period of stasis they become idylls for urban fauna and plant-life, taking on an accidental afterlife as refuge for those who require shelter.
The afterlife of the post industrial space is one that sees its gradual subsistence return to nature, plant life and urban fauna expanding into its space, reclaiming it.
The RAG is housed in a repurposed bank, we seek to honour these forgotten and disused spaces that litter post industrial cities such as Manchester globally. They remain sources/spaces of refuge and inspiration for many who exist at the fringes. We seek to explore this relationship between nature and industry in forgotten and disused spaces through art and performance and welcome any media interpretation

IN THE MAKING - TEN OBSTRUCTIONS
Salford Museum and Art Gallery - North Gallery
Salford M5 4WU
17 December – 16 April 2023
Opening event & meet the artists:
Saturday 17 December 2022 1.30-3.30pm
All welcome, free, but please book via the Salford Museum website
In the Making is an exhibition of painting, drawing, collage, fabric, photography, interaction, installation, sound, sculpture, design and moving image at Salford Museum and Art Gallery from 17 December 2022 to 26 April 2023, by Ten Obstructions artists Maya Chowdhry, Jack Doyle, Jane Fairhurst, Sarah Feinmann, Tina Finch, Sabrina Fuller, Claire Hignett, Paddy O’Donnell, Christopher Rainham and Ian Vines and curated by Claire Hignett and Ian Vines.
In this exhibition In the Making, the artists take their inspiration from Salford’s geology and archaeology; its geography, waterways, industrial history and development; the art in its gallery and objects in the museum, its people and their voices.
In this exhibition Rogue artist Sarah Feinmann investigated Ordsall Dyeworks. In Like Water Under the Bridge she focuses on Woden’s footbridge over the Irwell, as this is nearest to the former site of the dyeworks and is all that remains from the regeneration of the area. She prints with natural inks and dyes onto paper and collages mixed media surfaces.
The ten artists are from across Greater Manchester and originally came together in 2019 through the Castlefield Gallery’s bOlder programme which develops and supports artists aged over 50.
Forthcoming exhibition.
