To coincide with the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Touchstones, with generous support from Arts Council England, has created The Football Art Prize to celebrate arguably the world’s most popular sport.

They invited artists from around the world to submit their work to The Football Art Prize via an open submission, and our judging panel have selected a wide range of painting, photography, film and collage, representing the spectrum of experiences of the beautiful game.

Setterington’s piece FC Utd is a digitally stitched tablecloth made up of thousands of repeated signatures taken from the team sheet of FC Utd, a grass roots Manchester football team. The club was established in the early 2000s as a counter to the commercialism and corporate greed in sport today.

Painting is one of art's fundamental mediums, explored and enjoyed by thousands across the centuries. Since ancient Greece, painting has been the most dominant art form, used as a way to tell stories, record history, present the self, the world, science, literature and politics. All from the hushed silence on a flat stationary surface.

But what happens when painting no longer wants to be silent? When artists want to expand beyond the flat plane, where the focus is no longer on presenting realism but a move towards conceptual ideas and exploration. What happens when we stop and ask: What is a painting?

This exhibition presents the works of 27 artists who are doing just that: taking a more radical approach to painting and pushing the boundaries of what a painting is, how it is made, what it is made with and how it is presented.

Fully accessible with lift to both gallery floors

Archives at Play is an exhibition exploring our relationship with the past, and how this informs the way we make the future.

At a time when it is more important than ever to challenge inherited ideas about ecology, equality, and identity, this exhibition uses archival structures – the ways we hold and engage with the past – as a tool for questioning the worlds we find ourselves within.

The artists Gregory Herbert, Kelly Jayne Jones, Dr. Yan Wang Preston, and Chester Tenneson have been invited to take the concept of the archive as a starting point to develop a series of new works for Archives at Play.

You Love Me Really: Journeys Through Landscapes of Infrastructure

Featuring: Kevin Crooks, Helen Angell, Brian Lewis, Martin J Bull, Jen Orpin and Gareth E Rees

This small publication came about as a product of circumstance. Its contents stem from a series of three artists' conversations convened in January 2021 as part of a research network supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

With the help of the Modernist Society we advertised the artists' conversations, and more than 300 people were able to watch and engage with the artists as they discussed their own motivations and values ascribed to such apparently mundane subjects.

The ensuing conversations and discussions were rich and varied, and seemingly tapped into others' underlying appreciation for landscapes not typically viewed as valuable. In the following pages we present the outcomes of creative pairings between literary and visual artists with a short introduction that summarises some of our own thoughts about landscape, architecture, art and post-war Britain.

Limited edition of 100 (numbered). Available to purchase via The Modernist Society shop

An exhibition named after a David Foster Wallace short story - a story of loss and self-deception, of standing at the kitchen window, contemplating the view.

These paintings of women, mostly in domestic interiors, are saturated by coloured light. In ‘Everything is Green’, the window frames a scene of well worn familiarity, the view from the artist’s front room in Gorton. We see this repeated in other paintings around the room. It’s a very human-centric point of view, but you are not sheltered from the wider world - you are the one trapped inside. Reality still surrounds you just outside the window.

JENNY STEELE

Routledge Handbook of the Tourist Experience, edited by Richard Sharpley

A selection of photographs Lancashire coastal architecture from Jenny Steele's project ‘Looking Back/Moving Forwards’ from 2015-16, were used to accompany a recently published chapter by Dr David Jarratt in the recently published 'Routledge Handbook of the Tourist Experience'.

David’s chapter ‘The Importance of built heritage in the English seaside experience’ explores how architecture and other structures such as piers help create the framework next to the sea - as a space of the sublime and the beautiful - where we can we experience ‘seasideness’ and all its benefits. David writes about the layered and complex aspects of nostalgia at the seaside, from the personal to significant. Places such as small cafes do not need to be magnificent in structure but they robustly hold personal and family memories that we go back to relive, re experiencing and retelling the stories onwards.

Dr David Jarratt and Jenny Steele were partnered in 2016 as part of the Practicing Place programme pairing artists and academics with similar research interests by In Certain Places, Preston. They have collaborated on symposiums, talks, online articles and written a book chapter, which was referenced in this book.
